    Bennett passing on the Utes?

CoachingNewsOnline.com reports today that long-time St. Mary's coach Randy Bennett "will probably pass on the head job at Utah" and is waiting for a better fit. The Salt Lake Tribune notes that earlier reports of Utah and Bennett being in contract negotiations were inaccurate.

Could that free up former Alabama head coach Mark Gottfried, who was once an assistant at UCLA, to become the front-runner for the job? Maybe. Gottfried has been rumored to be a candidate since the Utes let Jim Boylen go, and is reportedly very interested in the position.

This will be very disappointing if true, but I'll be happy with Gottfried.

I was just kidding. Looks like Wyoming may end up with a better coach than Utah after all.

Honestly, I would take Ernie Kent as Utah's coach. Guy is one of the worst coaches in college hoops, but the guy can recruit with the best of them. 4/5 years you would hate him and the product on the floor would suck, but every 5 years he will give you an elite eight caliber team.

However, if my choice is Gottfried of Kent, I'll take Gottfried.

I was talking about the Blaine Taylor to Wyoming rumors.

If I was Wyoming I would take Kent over Blaine Taylor, not that I think Blaine Taylor is a bad hire. If Taylor has both Utah and Wyoming offers, he will end up at Utah.

Bennett must recognize the power that BYU will bring to the WCC.

The last time some jerk called out one of my fellow scrum-mates, I 'accidentally' grazed the back of his head with the 3/4" cast aluminum stud cleats (well worn studs = razor sharp corners) on my wicked-yet-somehow-legal size 14 Mitre Barbarians rugby boots* when he fell down during the next game and gave the little f-er 12 stiches. Don't mess with a rugby player. We know how to deliver the thunder WITHOUT relying on shoulder pads. (Legal Disclaimer: nowadays it is more rhetoric-based than literal, of course)

Sadly, you may be correct among the people who consider Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh and the like to be 'scholarly'. However I doubt that is true on this board, most people here are (allegedly) more driven more by logic, knowledge, and truth.

Whomever they hire to be the next coach, we are likely all in agreement that the next few years will be painful in hoops. With Bennett backing out I fear most successful coaches view the Utah job as a losing proposition. (I am sure this has been said many times in this thread, and I don't care to go back and read it all.)

In any event we are in for a few painful years in hoops, as if the last several haven't been painful enough.

While watching an Army-Navy "A" side match back in the day a Squid prop slipped and fell as an Army prop was getting up. The ball, and the the ref, had moved down the field as Army was on a run so the Army guy grinned at the Squid and stomped right on the side of his head.

I am glad that there aren't pictures of the wound or else Robin and all the other concerned wankers about wanton American violence in Afghanastan would be pulling string like the Mormon Church had fired a kid for calling the busdriver a cocksucker.

Ha! I played in High School (and later some Club) but there were only a few HS teams around the area. So we played local club teams, and college teams. We were limited to 18 years of age as the max (which benefitted Highland due to lack of accuracy in birth certificates in Samoa, Tonga, Fiji) so some of the guys we played against were very big and tough by comparison. They were without a doubt bigger and stronger than we were, but we could run all game long and they would be severely winded in the second half.

Sometimes tough things happened, but when the opposing player is legally part of the ground, you will take advantage of the situation. Good times!

I totally agree. I think Jazzy is offbase on his coaching updates. He is trying but I think he is getting bad info.

My update is that the Utes will offer Brad Stevens and that he will happily accept it and be glad to be in a conference where he can get invited to the Big Dance.
