The weirdest part of that contract is that Boylen is supposed to "downplay defeats". lol Keep the fans in the dark. Feed them pooh and pizza. They'll forget the records/scores. It's partially worked.

Is it normal to have those types of clauses in a contract? I can't imagine a school trying to enforce them unless there was some type of egregious behavior.Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Once you get past the boilerplate and numbers that are common or necessary in both Boylen and Kyle's contracts, there's a lot of differences, and most of those are in Boylen's contract.Originally posted by myboynoah View PostIs it normal to have those types of clauses in a contract? That's the University's fiscal year, you dope. All contracts run from July 1.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostI wonder if Chris Hill thought about the ramifications of that July 1 start of the term date. In any event, it means that the net cost of retaining him another year is $500,000 paid out over four years.
That's Victorian, son. And I am not saying I would have a problem with Billy, I'm just being realistic. Kind of like BYU fans who want star players to skip missions. We all have a point at which we sell out our core beliefs.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostWe've got to keep LA and his Victorial LDS sensitivities out of these decisions.
No. See above answer.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostIt is unfortunate that Utah lacks the nobility of Notre Dame when it kept Gerry Faust until his contract was fulfilled. Don't you find it disturbing that the Univesity of Utah, as a flagship academic instiutition that prides itself on a greater devotion to ethics, would dismiss a head coach before his contract is fulfilled?Last edited by LA Ute; 02-14-2011, 02:43 PM.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

I sell out way before star players. Pine riders should feel free to serve if they so feel though.

Look we have proven in the past that we will look the other way on a lot of things if we win games. We can arrange to get Mr. Gillespie his own hotel room where he can bang all the barmaids that he wants.Originally posted by landpoke View PostUtah, The School of the Prophets, jewel of lovely Deseret, would be a horrible fit for Gillispie. He belongs amongst the heathens and the unwashed. Among those who understand and appreciate a coach who can tie one on and then nail a barmaid on a pool table.

I went and looked over Utefans and I was surprised. Kind of interesting. It is somewhat similar to the end of the Crowton era. Boylen is a great guy and Utah might not have thousands of candidates with more impressive resumes than either Boylen or Giacolletti breaking down its doors, but the fact remains that if Utah wants to be good they will not be able to accomplish that with Jim Boylen as the head coach. He is a great dude but he is just not a good head coach. You don't know if the next available best candidate willing to take the job is a good head coach either, but you do know that Jim Boylen is not. The hope is the next one will be a good head coach and you take that leap of faith into the unknown. I think the odds are he will be a solid head coach, heaven knows you poor souls have been chastened for turning a blind eye to Majerus misdeeds so I think LadyLuck is in your favor. Most knowledgable basketball fans probably agree with me that it is not likely he will be as good as Dave Rose, but knowing that should not intimidate the U from acting.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostThe weirdest part of that contract is that Boylen is supposed to "downplay defeats". lol Keep the fans in the dark. Amen. LAUte had a son that at one time was interested in attending a Service Academy. The youngster and I emailed back and forth a few times. My influence was such that he chose the U. Given the past decade, I would probably not be entirely enthusiastic if my son were to choose an SA right now either. Appparantly, LA came away with fond thoughts of me to think I only want star players to skip missions. Like you, if a kid is scholarship worthy Jimmer stands as an example of what one can really do for the Kingdom of God by eschewing mission service. To quote the great sage: "missions make them better people, but not better basketball players." BYU's high and holy entrance standards ensure that its students are good people enough already, they don't need the mission service the great sage referenced.Originally posted by Coach McGuirk View PostI sell out way before star players. Obvious sarcasm, but I think it deserves to be said that a willingness to avoid (or profess avoidance of) sex and coffee has nothing to do with how good of a person one is. Nor, I would say, does the completion of a mission.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostAmen. LAUte had a son that at one time was interested in attending a Service Academy. I think the Sage only said "missions made his players into better people." Not that they made people into good people. Perhaps he thought Alex Jensen was a shitbag before he went on one and then came home a little less of a shitbag. That is how I feel about SeattleUte and his mission service.Originally posted by woot View PostObvious sarcasm, but I think it deserves to be said that a willingness to avoid (or profess avoidance of) sex and coffee has nothing to do with how good of a person one is. Fair enough. I certainly gained some important life experience. I will, however, have to agree with what SU has said in the past, in that two years of anything during some of the most formative years of a young man's life will result in some very important experiences. I don't imagine that a mission did any more for me than 2 years in the military or peace corp would have done.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostI think the Sage only said "missions made his players into better people."
