Are there still attendance requirements for nonLDS students to some form of religious gathering? is it (or was it) a requirement for the ecclesiastical endorsement or am I misremembering?

No. They need an ecclesiastical endorsement which just means they talk to their own ecclesiastical leader and commit to the honor code. Or if they don't have one of those they can talk to someone in the student life office on campus who talks with them about it and signs the form, or something like that. There is no requirement for non-LDS students to attend a church.
