BYU Basketball 25-26: The AJ Season

I was sitting next to AJ's parents for about 3 minutes till they got moved to the front row.

Good win. General notes:

• I like Miami's coach and he's put together a pretty decent team. Crazy that they had zero returning players (although maybe you don't want too many players returning from last season's Miami's team...)
• We definitely needed Davis back in the staring lineup. He's just a solid player on both offense and defense.
• Looks like in the closer games against better competition we might only be seeing two bench players get significant minutes
• Baker's injury did not look good. I'm about to have ACL surgery myself so I really felt for him when he was clutching his knee. Best case is maybe a bruised knee and he's out a couple weeks to a month? But worse case, he's done.
• Having more TOs than assists is not a good thing.
• For the most part the zone defense worked well
• We're giving up waaaay too many offensive rebounds

Player of the game awards (no ORtg/DRtg for this game):

• PER: Keba Keita - 10 rebounds and 7 blocks. What a monster of a defensive player he is, and good enough to be the best overall player for this game!!
• GSc: Keita
• TS: Keita - I debated whether to give him the award since he only took 2 shots, but he also had some FT attempts, so why not
• Suber Sub: Diomande - In 5 minutes he hit a 3P and grabbed 3 boards.

Struggled to Perform awards:

• PER: Khadim Mboup - At 17 minutes he barely qualified and he played half the minutes of most of the starters. He's PER/Min was in line with Saunders and Dybansta. He had 6 rebounds, but just needed to do a little bit more overall in his 17 minutes.
• GSc: Mboup
• TS%: Saunders. It was not his shooting night, and if not for his 5 assists he likely would have had the worst PER.

Up next is Dayton, who is 6-1 and #69 in Kenpom.For a neutral site game, they are currently a mid Q2 opponent.

Hot take here: I think when Dybantsa drives he focuses way too much on the theatrics of trying to get a whistle than he does on actually trying to finish at the rim.

Cougs look completely uninterested in this game.

That skinny Frenchie is patrolling the paint and the Cougs seem afraid to go at him. Then they’re getting completely hung up on screens on the defensive end with no hustle.

The Cougars are struggling against this defense. Maybe the Jekyll and Hyde first half/second half trend will continue.

The silver lining is that BYU has been thoroughly outplayed and is down by only six. I like their chances, and this coaching staff seems to adjust well, but man . . .
