BYU loses an OT game to Utah by 1. Erickson got a late call while Saunders got mobbed with no call. But we have to freaking hit our FTs. It's hard to know if this is a coaching thing or a players' thing. I guess you could consider us unlucky (although I don't like the word) having lost so many close games. We just need to get over that hump. What's disappointing to me though, is that the players that KY brought in have really under achieved IMO. Demin, Catchings, Keita, Mag (only somewhat as I never really expected him to do too much). Our offense has too much standing around at times. We don't have a super NBA talent where someone can take over and beat their man to the hoop. We NEED an offense to move players around and to have some structure as to what we are doing. I'm going to again reference Saunders' preseason interview where he said (paraphrasing): "We just try something and if it works we do it again." I've never in my life of following various sports, heard of that approach before. I am giving KY this year, and next year. He obviously can recruit. But the question is definitely debatable as to whether he can coach. If he can't, then he'd better get some assistants who can. And, he just might need to adapt to the college game. This ain't the NBA.
Foussey Traore gets the Player of the Game, for the third time. Honestly, I don't think he's the type of player that KY recruits, but he's the type of player that I love having on my team. A bit old school. He missed a late shot, but it's hard to fault him when he had a TS% of 61.5%. I love my Dancing Bear! He had the highest, PER, GSc, and TS%.
Dawson Baker gets the Struggled to Perform award, for the 4th time. Another subpar shooting night, and he doesn't bring much to the table besides scoring, so he's gotta step up in that department. Hall had the worst GSc and TS%. His 4 Ast and 0 TOs saved him from having the worst PER, but he is also really struggling this season.
The season average PER has been updated with the two games from this week. The top 3 remain the same although Foos moved ahead of Saunders.
BYU is now 11-6 (2-4) and #45 in Kenpom and #46 in NET. Utah is now #73 in Kenpom and #70 in NET. Currently this is a Q1 loss. Next up is Colorado, who is 9-8 (0-6) and #92 in Kenpom and #92 in NET. As another away game, this is a middle of the road Q2 game.
