  • Knell is a liability out there so far today.

        • A disappointing loss but lots to be encouraged about. It's the most talent-laden BYU team ever and it's going to be fun watching it develop.

          • BYU should’ve won that game, it’s going to be a fun team. I will admit to not understanding why Knell and Baker feature so prominently.

            • Way too many turnovers and the defense was not great. Hope those improve.

              • BYU loses to a good Ole Miss team with lots of seniors and juniors. I know every team can play the "what if" game, but if we had this same roster of players, but with a whole year under Coach Young, I think we win this game. It was a tale of two halves as Saunders and Catchings had great first halves, but both disappeared in the second half. Meanwhile, Foos dominated the second half. I'm going to preach this until I'm blue in the face, but good things happen when the ball goes into the paint on offense. We can spread our players and pass the ball around the perimter all day long, but once we started feeding Foos good things happened. Even if Keita isn't a back to the basket type player, I think we really need to find a way to get him involved offensively. Knell and Baker are both good bench players, but their minutes need to be tied to how hot they are shooting the ball because neither brings any defense Demin was very average this game. He had only 1 assist at HT and he appeared rattled at the intense pressure defense on him. And his defensive rotation was the culprit for several baskets for Ole Miss. Our major downfall this game was turnovers. BYU had 17 to just 9 for Ole Miss. Looking at that alone it's a wonder that this game was as close as it was. On the positive side, we shot 80.8% free throws!

Player of the Game goes to Foussey Traore, for the second time this season. He shot efficiently, had 3 assists and had a steal and a block. Maybe he should have had a few more rebounds, but the GSc agrees that he was our best player today. And that dunk, oh my! Boskovic had the best TS% and I feel that when he is on the court he should feature more offensively. Keita got credited with both the best ORtg and DRtg although I'm not really sure why. He scored 0 points and had 0 steals and blocks. He is extremely athletic and I just feel we aren't using him enough/properly.

Kanon Catchings gets the Struggled to Perform award. I get Jaxon Robinson vibes from him. He did lead us in scoring, but he misses a lot of shots (although 58.7% TS% is not bad), but no assists, steals, or blocks, and at 6'9 he should have more than 4 rebounds in 32 minutes. He was given the worst ORtg despite leading in points. Hall had the worst TS% and DRtg. He had a good 4-0 assist-turnover ratio, but I feel like we need more than 2 points out of him. Keita had the worst GSc and it was not nearly as impressed with him as my PER was.

BYU is now 5-1 and #36 in Kenpom and Ole Miss is #41. Somehow we are above them...This is currently a Q1 loss so I'm not worried. Up next is NC State who is 5-1 and #59 in Kenpom. This would also be a Q1 game and they played Purdue pretty well.

                • So who is your starting 5 after 6 games if KY let's you choose?

                  Hall
                  Demin
                  Catchings
                  Saunders
                  Fouss

Who I'd like to see more of:
                  Crawford
                  Mag

I assume we don't see them much because of how things look in practice, but I feel like neither of these guys has had the minutes to get in any kind of rhythm.

Who I'd like to see less of:
                  Knell
                  Baker

Knell can be deadly but he can also go dead cold. I feel like cold has become the default setting. I'm still taking the experts' word for it that Baker is a lights out shooter. I've seen it in one game against a really bad team. I'm hoping both eventually become important pieces of this year's puzzle, but right now I'm more puzzled by their prominence in the rotation based solely on game performances.

                  • Hall seems a bit too deferential right now, maybe not wanting to step on Egor's toes. He needs to get back in the swing of things and be more assertive, both in finding guys and in taking good shots.

                      • BYU beats NC St by 11 in fairly balanced, but low scoring game. We jumped out to hot start hitting lots of 3s and we got quite a few points in the paint as well. We were up by 20 in the second half, but some late 3s by NC St and cold shooting by BYU made the final scorer look closer than it really was. Maybe we let off the gas, or maybe NC St just has fight in them. I was pleased to see Keita get some touches in the paint besides just lobs. He's been getting a few assists every game without turning the ball over. I'm very impressed with all of the little things that he does, and without touching the ball much. It's hard to tell if NC St was just cold or if our defense was just that good. This was a good win and I'll cheer for NC St to do well to keep this as a quality win.

Egor Demin gets the Player of the Game, for the 4th time in 7 games. No player at a truly outstanding game, but he was our best player on the court today, IMO. He had a game high 11 boards. His 4 assists were a bit down, but they were also a game high. I would classify this as a good solid game from him. Saunders got the best GSc and also had the best TS%. GSc gives negative points for fouls whereas I don't so that's why GSc rated Demin lower. IMO not all fouls are bad. Low fouls are sometimes an indicator of not playing aggressive enough and sometimes a foul is better than giving up an easy basket, so that's why I leave fouls out of my calculations. In any case, Richie was pretty good today. Anytime someone has a TS% of 60%+ I'm going to say that they need to be shooting more. So maybe he should have taken more shots. When he's in the zone, I want to see him be more selfish.

Dawson Baker gets the Struggled to Peform, for the second time. We got a decent 9 points from him, but he had the worst TS% so it took him a lot of shots to get those points. 3 TOs didn't help his cause. For the most part I'm a fan of his offensive game because I believe in what he can do (especially the lost mid-range jumper), but I'm not sure why he got 20 minutes when he just wasn't playing that well. I guess the question is who else gets his minutes? Not Knell, right? Stewart or Crawford? Boskovic is not the same position, and in general I'd like to see him get more minutes, but he didn't play well either.

BYU is now 6-1 and #33 in Kenpom. NC St is 5-2 and #68 so this would currently be a Q2 win. Up next is Providence, who is 5-3 and #100, which would currently be a Q2 game.

For our average PER over the season, the top 3 of Demin, Traore, and Saunders remain the same after the last 2 games. Someone asked who should be our starting 5 and I'm always tempted to say it should be our top 5 PER players, which would currently be Demin, Traore, Saunders, Keita, and Hall. It would be very interesting to see Foos and Keita play together and I would like to at least see it for a few short time spans to find out what happens.

                        • I was very frustrated with Baker's play. Only 3 turnovers? Felt like he was constantly losing control of the ball and/or falling to the ground. He did score some nice buckets and had at least an assist or two. I think his minutes against athletic teams (including the entire Big 12) need to be a lot tighter.

I've been surprised by Mawot Mag. He didn't even get in the game today. He was billed as a great defensive player, but I haven't really been impressed with his defense. Maybe he's not getting minutes because the coaches haven't been impressed, either.

Catchings has such a high upside, but he just seems absent from games for long stretches. Freshman, I guess.

Last year's me would be surprised at this, but I'd actually like to see Trey Stewart get a few more minutes. I think we'll need his athleticism during conference play. I'd also like to see more of Boskovic. I think he's got a lot of potential, though he's been a bit rough at times so far.

I agree that Catchings has a lot of potential, but the way he is currently playing I don't see him being drafted as a one-and-done. But that means we get him for multiple seasons!

                            • Catchings is terrible on defense.

He has gotten some blocks but otherwise, yes. He is frequently out of position and jumping (fouling) on pump fakes.
