I got plenty of intestinal fortitude. I am likely to be cheering well if the policies change drastically and BYU ends up in the Big Sky-I am more than willing to allow BYU to do whatever it wants to do. I have a deep interest in this subject because not only does it concern me as a lifetime BYU sports fan but I find this change enormously interesting wrt the greater LDS Culture at large. Most cultures, and individuals, go through cycles of reaching outside itself and then re-entrenching. I just hope we don't end up an asshole at the end of the process like Iron-Tex/Phillipedes or whatever that fellow from Heber calls himself now.
So use my words against me-without attributing my intellectual property properly (woebeuntoyou were you a Cadet as that is an egregious Honor Code violation and could have resulted in the Duffle Bag Drag Shuffle there)-but my interest in this will stay piqued for quite some time.
Exactly. Look at the culture in our football program right now. That is great for both the university and church. The fact that we have non-LDS players involved is a bonus. Look at all the positive press about our QB. We need players who can adapt to that environment but there are plenty to go around. Especially when we are winning.
Good grief, show a little intestinal fortitude, people.
Intestinal fortitude? As much as JL detests a strawman, he can be quite good at building them! No one here is predicting a retrenchment (outside of maybe GN) and certainly no one wants to go back to the old ways. Not on this board anyway. Recognizing that we are in unchartered territory for BYU and the Church and suggesting maybe the Church will return to its more "traditional" approach to sports is simply a recognition of our history and culture. This is a BIG shift, after all.
GO COUGS!
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

Lol. No.
Every time I predict a victory in the football threads I get scolded in some way. But yet we are 9-0 in spite of my meddling. Think how high we would be ranked if I just believed the worst to emotionally protect myself!

Just keep doing whatever you are doing.
Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."
BYU beats Queens 99-55 with a very fast start. Queens didn't get to double digit points as a team until 5:44 left in the first half! At times we played great defense. Although at other times Queens got hot and hit several 3s in a row. Many of our benchwarmers made it into the game for the first time this season. I was surprised to see Kozlowski burn his redshirt...and in his 6 minutes he did absolutely nothing. On offense he literally stood in the corner and didn't move around to try to get open. Maybe he was nervous, but tonight he looked like he's gonna take 3-4 years to develop. Demin and Crawford played together on the floor tonight.
Baker Dawson gets the Player of the Game award. He came off the bench to lead all players with 22 points. He had the highest PER and GSc, and had an amazing TS% of 110%. Yes, it is possible to have a True Shooting Percentage above 100%. By hitting 6 threes, he was being very efficient with his points per shot attempt. Traore gets the best DRtg and he was just all around very impressive. Catchings somehow got the best ORtg, which is a mystery to me. He had 2 offensive rebounds and 2 assists, but other players had more. He didn't turn the ball over, so that was good. Personally, I think he needs to get a lot better with his shot selection. He does well with rebounds and defense, but I'm actually a bit disappointed with his offense right now.
Richie Saunders gets the Struggled to Perform award. He didn't really play horrible, but a PER of 6.9 against such an easy opponent, is a bit of a let down for him. I didn't see his typical high enery high motor play from him. GSc also agreed that he was the weakest link of all players with 15+ minutes. Catchings had the worst TS%. As previously stated, I want to see him rely less on his shot and more on his athleticism right now. Knell had the worst DRtg which doesn't really surprise me, but 112.5 isn't really that bad either. As a team, we played really good defense overall. Crawford had the lowest ORtg. He had 4 assists, but also 2 turnovers. I have to imagine when Hall is healthy Crawford will be getting much fewer minutes.
BYU is now 3-0 and #25 in Kenpom. Queens is now #301 which should make this a Quad 4 win for sure. Up next is Idaho, who is 1-2 and #292 in Kenpom. This will also most likely be a Q4 game.
Kozlowski coming in was a big surprise. I always assume when a BYU announcing crew says something like "I wonder if Kozlowski is going to redshirt this year since he has yet to play?" that they have inside info and they are just kind of telling us without telling us.

He also just kind of stood in the corner the whole time.
I didn't watch the game live and didn't get to catch the "BYU live stats" before they "disappeared" so no +/- or ORtg/DRtg for the Idaho game, but those are the most meaningless stats I include. My thoughts...Before the season began Saunders did an interview on BYUtv and they asked him what kind of offense BYU was going to run and he said something like, "We don't really run any set plays, we just try something and if doesn't work, then we try something different next time." I was floored by this answer. I'm not saying that we need to run Motion or some other set offense every single time down the court, but the first half proved my worries that sometimes we have no freakin clue what we are doing on offense. Maybe by the end of the season things will look different, but right now I don't think our guys can run an NBA offense. And you know what saved us? Doing a very non-NBA thing. Going to post-up play. I personally enjoy seeing great post play. I really enjoyed watching Zach Edey play last season. Are Foos and Edey going to be great NBA centers? Probably not. But I love college basketball because of the various types of offenses (and defenses) that you will see. The post game is not dead in college basketball [yet].
We had three really good individual performances, two of them were "game of the season" type performances. Foussey Traore beat out Saunders by 0.1 in my PER score. Nearly perfect from the field and almost a double-double, and no TOs. It's no surprise that he also had the best GSc and TS%. I REALLY hope that we don't abondend the post play in future games. Attack the paint and play an inside-out game. In Foos I trust! Koodos to Saunders for also have an outstanding game. He was relentless on defense and offense. Sure, he shot a team-high 8 3FGs (making 50%), but he also attacked the paint and drove to the basket. That's what I want to see from Catchings. He's got the talent, but he has a little too much Jaxon Robinson in him, where he relies too much on his jump shot and ignores his athleticism. He's not Trevin Knell. Use your god-given abilities to blow past your opponent and out-skill them! Second koodos to Demin for shooting efficiently and handing out 7 dimes to just 1 TO. He was great on defense too with 3 steals and 3 blocks!
Struggled to Perform goes to Mihailo Boskovic. He played 16 minutes, but didn't register any points, and had 2 TOs. He joined the team late. I think we'll see good improvement from him during the season. I already talked about Catchings enough, so I'll leave what I said about him, but I stand by it. For someone that's being touted as a first round pick, I want to see more.
