At the bare minimum, it would have just caused SU to ratchet up his sanctimonious rhetoric to even more unbearable levels.
So when you initially said the only "rumors" you heard were academics, were you trying to throw SU off the trail or hadn't you gotten the information on the other stuff yet?

Well, I heard academics from another place and that was a lot less inflammatory than DUI. I think enough info has come out to show that academics (at least in terms of attendance, etc. moreso than grades) was a contributing factor.

I missed the part of the article noting how the HC office was aware of the incident and was taking action. I'm sure if you were in charge of that office, even after students withdrew voluntarily from the university you would pursue them with ex post facto charges of HC violations, pointlessly raising issues where there were none. You're very good at that.

Well, like I said I applaud you for keeping it to yourself. You still get credit for having inside information and who cares about anyone who thinks you didn't.

I think we need to give credit where credit is due.

MPFunk recognized the undertones of sporting a mohawk during the NCAA tournament. He realized thing was a sign of greater unknown problems. Kudos to him for his sharp eye and discriminating intellect.

I know Jay Drew has a job to do, but I wish that he could have kept this stuff to himself, at least until Mike found a new school to attend. Look, the kid's not getting paid to play and he already has been dismissed from the team and the school (which he apparently wanted to stay at). I don't see the need to put him through anything more.

I understand that Lloyd is a public figure, at least as far as the BYU basketball team goes, but he's not compensated like one, or at least his "wages" are artificially deflated in relation to the revenue he generates for others. I think he has paid the price for what happened and I wish Drew would have at least held the story until Lloyd found a new home.

On a side note, I really like how Rose has handled the whole situation. He seems to be a stand up guy, and while it would have been easier for him to make public things about Mike that would deflect criticism from him and the team, he chose to protect him instead. Good on him.

I agree. I see little value in this news and wish it oucld have waited untiul Lloyd decided what he was oging to do next. OTOH, I am the least curious person in the world.
                PLesa excuse the tpyos.

Totally agree. Sure our curiousity is now quenched, but what good comes from it.

I also found it interesting that there is a quote, I think from a cop, joking about Lloyd saying he had only one drink and one joint. Now, I might joke about that privately, but is that something you say to a reporter if you are in law enforcement. I read that initally and somehow missed in the article where he wasn't convicted of DUI.

No doubt with all these revelations, guy isn't disciplined, doesn't fit at BYU, but I wonder how much added condemnation is heaped on him because we won't get any talk of mitigating circumstances. Maybe there are none, but he has been taken down pretty good.

From what I read, he got that from the public police report, not straight from the policeman's mouth.

I might be wrong. I have a son in law enforcement and I will ask him his opinion on those kind of comments in a police report. He will probably call me an old fart.

In this instance I think you may be wrong. Remember, the first officer ran his plates before Loyd even asked for directions. That's why I assume this may have been profiling (it doesn't say whether Loyd was in the car when the officer initially ran the plates). So the running of the plates had nothing to do with any smells. And also remember, that first officer does not appear to have noticed any smell of alcohol or weed. It was only after the back-up arrived that the smells came into question. My gut feeling is that a white kid sitting in the same car doesn't get his plates run and that back-up is never called (assuming it was) and that after he flags the officer down he gets directions to I-15. But hey, in the end he was stupid enough to flag a cop down with weed in his car so I guess it's not the world's greatest tragedy.

Well I still think you're wrong or perhaps assuming too much.

If you have out of state plates you get them ran through the system all of the time. Mostly because it's an easy citation if you're an established resident still driving a vehicle not registered in the state.

All we know from Drew's blog is that the cop ran the plates previously when he saw the car parked there. We don't even know if the cop saw Loyd in any sort of connection with the car. When Loyd asks them how to get to I-15 we don't know what the first cop smelled or didn't. All we know is he was calling the Provo police if they wanted to serve the warrants. In such a circumstance backup is usually protocol. While the first cop is talking to the Provo police the second cop smells the weed. The Provo police want the warrants served. He's held. They find weed in the car. He's taken to Provo where he later posts bail.

Could this have been racial profiling? Sure. But I don't think we can assume it here.

I come from a law enforcement family so the cynicism gets to me.

You belong on uf.n, you really do. All of this conference shake-up chatter going on, despite a mediocre athletic program, and all you can still talk about is BYU. I love being a fan of this team even with it's obvious flaws (ie honor code vs athletics). If my allegiance ever begins to wane I have but to read one of your posts and the color of my blood once again returns to a lovely royal blue. Thanks, I really mean that.
