Wasn't sure if this belonged here or in the Utah politics thread. Utah uses mail-in voting, to the tune of 97% of people that voted used their mail-in ballot. Trump wants to get rid of mail-on voting. And Mike Lee supports Trump. Because of course he does.

There was a sound bite after Trump's meeting with Putin. Trump said Putin told him that the election was stolen and it was because of mail-in voting. And Trump seemed to believe that.

I think the legislature already passed some dumb laws forbidding automatically being able to mail in your ballots.

Since the political violence in Minnesota, I have been regularly contacting Mike Lee asking for him to address his inappropriate behavior. This latest political violence seemed like a good time to reach out again. My latest to Mike Lee:

Senator Lee,

I have contacted you a few times about this and continue to receive silence from you. I have asked in each message for a reply.

I am absolutely gutted by the political violence that happened in Utah yesterday. I have fortunately seen many people on both sides of the aisle post heartfelt messages condemning the political violence and support for Mr. Kirk's family. It is absolutely gutting to know of the trauma that was inflicted on his two children and his wife. I also feel for everyone that was there that had to witness a man being murdered.

This reminded me of your reaction to the political violence in Minnesota. You commented on this violence and it was not sympathy for the people who were attacked. Rather, you used it as an opportunity to criticize your ideological opponents. You were even confronted about this by at least one fellow Senator who expressed her concern about the impact your behavior had on these families that were in mourning.

Given the high profile of Mr. Kirk, I'd be surprised if you didn't personally know him. I am sure you are having a difficult time with what happened. I am and I don't even know him as a person and I disagree with nearly all of his positions. Does this cause you some introspection and to re-evaluate how you addressed the political violence in Minnesota? I think it is past time to acknowledge your wrongdoing and apologize for your behavior.

This is good. Every email response I get back from Lee's office never even attempts to address the issues I wrote about. This was the last response I got.

Yeah, I'm not even getting those types of responses on this one. He is completely silent. I actually got a substantive response from when i contacted his office about something else. It was clearly a form response that he was sending regarding the respect for marriage act. This is what it said:

Thank you for reaching out regarding the Respect for Marriage Act. I believe that all Americans should be able to live in peace with each other without fear of coercion. Unfortunately, society seems more divided than ever, and I fear that the growth of the federal government is largely to blame for these increasing tensions.

I recently voted against the Respect for Marriage Act. Contrary to Democratic and media talking points, this bill goes far beyond codifying the Obergefell Supreme Court decision. Obergefell did not make a private right of action for aggrieved individuals to sue those who oppose same-sex marriage. Obergefell did not create a mandate for the Department of Justice to sue where it perceived an institution opposed same-sex marriage. The Respect for Marriage Act will do both. While I respect the efforts and emotions surrounding the issue, this legislation will curtail the religious liberty of American individuals, schools, businesses, churches, and other organizations.

Current attempts at religious-liberty protections are insufficient – they are largely a restatement of constitutional principles and existing laws protecting churches, however, they fail to affirm that individuals still have the right to act according to their faith and deepest convictions even outside of their church or home. Religious Americans will be subject to potentially ruinous litigation, while the tax-exempt status of certain charitable organizations, educational institutions, and non-profits will be threatened. I proposed an amendment that would have shored up these vulnerabilities and ensured adequate protections for people and organizations with faith and conscience concerns. Unfortunately, it was rejected prior to the bill's passage. For this reason, I voted nay.

Every human deserves to be respected, regardless of marital status, gender orientation, or religious beliefs. In addition, no American should face legal harassment or retaliation from the federal government for holding sincerely held religious beliefs or moral convictions. As I continue to advocate for religious liberty protections, rest assured that I will keep your comments in mind.
