They voted for Trump last round because they felt overlooked and neglected by the Dems. Now they see what Trump stands for - but that doesn't necessarily make Biden more appealing. It just makes Trump less so. More than any other election (which is saying something after 2016) people are spending more time considering who to cast a vote against rather than who to vote for.
I think you're describing more what non-crazy Republicans are feeling rather than the actual independent middle who the polls are showing are leaning Democrat right now, as in 2018.

Trump has an awful lot of ground to make up as of today and has to do it without a Clinton email scandal to get a last minute James Comey boost from. If anything, the rcp map below is probably being generous to Trump since he currently trails in some of these "tossup" states like Michigan by double digits in some polls.

    • I think middle America would rather thwart the descent into facism that Trump has us in. Without even mentioning unmarked CBP troops in American cities arresting protestors (the exact same non-due process way they've been 'arresting' (vanishing) immigrants for decades, by the way).
The Trump administration is now openly flouting the Supreme Court ruling on DACA-- yesterday DHS issued a memo on how the Supreme Court was wrong and that they won't be accepting new DACA applications. Seriously? Seriously. I'm worried for Trump- how can this kind of bad karma keep an errant airliner out of his living room for long?

I was reading about that yesterday. How does SCOTUS hold the Executive's feet to the fire in this case? Crazy times.

Agreed. Trump is in serious trouble this time. He barely won last election but his hole is a lot bigger this go around and his recent record is pretty terrible. Trump is even now running ads in Texas. He didn't do that last election, in fact, Hillary was the one running ads in Texas in an attempt to broaden her map. If Trump is worried about Texas, then he is in trouble.

They could be held in contempt. We'll see if they have the gusto to do that against a sitting president and his goons.

That's basically a comply or go to jail prospect.

I'm probably showing my ignorance, but who does the Judiciary control to enforce that order? Or do you end up with a stand off between branches? I.e., we wont issue anymore warrants for you until you enforce our order?

Well, no one. But our system has never been pushed to that point.

Is impeachment/conviction and removal the only real recourse?
