I think the senate helps even out the playing field locally. Senators from even the smallest states can wield a lot of power in congress, and that is where most of political change happens anyways. Honestly I don't think the political playing field needs to be evened out more than that nationally.Originally posted by falafel View PostThe problem is (and you know this), eliminating the EC gives those large population blue states much more power in electing the President at the expense of the more rural red states. The EC is designed to even things out and make candidates appeal to the whole country, not just the urban areas/states. Why aren't you concerned about the smaller states getting left behind?
And I get that the electoral college is based on population, so it's not like elections are being outright stolen just because it has to go through a separate archaic process. It's just a lot of energy that candidates and parties have to expend on things other than winning the most votes, which really should be the only goal. But I'm also concerned that we might be seeing a trend, where a democrat has to win by a solid majority to ensure a narrow EC victory. And this could be reversed if the political fortunes change.
Look, the electoral college is not going away. I just think it's really showing it's age and we could do elections just fine without it. It's way down on my wishlist, way below term limits for SC justices and a parliamentary decmocracy!"...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Do you think it's possible for you to post without using words like "hilarious," "absurd," "canard," and "truther"? Your bare assertions do not make it so. Maybe your reasoning is too stunted and your vocabulary is too limited to go without these epithets."

I think he believes that you were saying that the less populated states don't have educated people (or have less of them).Originally posted by BlueK View PostWow what? This. You guys need to go watch the old American Heritage class video "A more perfect Union".Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostThe electoral college is great. One of the best parts of the constitution.
The threat of tyranny of the majority is as big today as it was when the constitution was written.
I think the bigger issue today is that congress isn't wielding the power that is should and is relegating it to POTUS and SCOTUS. If congress has most of the power then you have the checks and balances needed to make sure people cooperate and work together and there isn't such a huge fight over the executive and judicial branches.
