I hope you are right but I have my doubts. I agree with you about who needs who more but I dont think the majority of the west does.

This all sounds great and may be necessary but it is also very creepy to me. We have no Morgan Freeman to destroy the system after we beat Covid-19.
I was almost impressed with China's ability to stop an exponential curve within 48 hours as I was that Kim Jong Un had never met a Par 5 that he couldn't double eagle.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Yep. I think in general companies will begin to or continue to move supply chains out of China. Korean firms have been burned badly by their Chinese experience long before COVID came on scene.

People will not forget that this all started in a Chinese wet market and will have very close eyes on China moving forward. They need to verify that they are closing those wet markets and instituting international recognized hygiene standards in handling food.

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

They need to provide some heavy incentives to manufacture anywhere in the world except for China. Couple it with heavy disincentives to do the opposite. I hope the economy is strong enough after this mess in order to do something like this. It would be nice if we could get even more manufacturing into Mexico, but Vietnam and Malaysia are also more than acceptable.

          China is asshoe.

I read on twitter that china reopened the wet markets today.

Mexican infrastructure is awful. And the government from the president down to the locals is corrupt. You can't just throw money at them for infrastucture projects because they never get done. But they won't let us control it. We should study the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative and see if we can learn something for how to build Mexico into a manufacturing powerhouse.

Vietnam, India, and Malaysia hold the most promise for getting out of China. Vietnam has a heavy Chinese influence with many of the factories actually owned by the Chinese. When the tariffs started many Chinese factory owners just moved their factories to Vietnam. I'm not sure moving manufacturing to Vietnam does much as far as decoupling.

India is interesting. Price competitive but their infrastructure is also lacking. You have to plan for an extra two weeks of transport time for containers out of India.

The point is they would have to build up that infrastructure outside of China, that goes without saying. It will take a long time. At one point during this crisis China threatened to withhold pharmaceuticals from the US -- pharmaceuticals made through US intellectual property. This is not a country we should be dealing with beyond allowing them to make a bunch of menial garbage.

                  • Bunch of idiots. He's a national hero.

Anthony Fauci’s security is stepped up as doctor and face of U.S. coronavirus response receives threats

The exact nature of the threats against him was not clear. Greater exposure has led to more praise for the doctor but also more criticism.

Fauci has become a public target for some right-wing commentators and bloggers, who exercise influence over parts of the president’s base. As they press for the president to ease restrictions to reinvigorate economic activity, some of these figures have assailed Fauci and questioned his expertise.

Last month, an article depicting him as an agent of the “deep state” gained nearly 25,000 interactions on Facebook — meaning likes, comments and shares — as it was posted to large pro-Trump groups with titles such as “Trump Strong” and “Tampa Bay Trump Club.”

                    • Social distancing works. The earlier the better, California and Washington data show.
Two weeks into mandatory stay-at-home orders in the San Francisco Bay area and Washington state, there’s evidence the curve of infections is flattening compared with other U.S. metro areas

Mandatory social distancing works. The earlier the better, preliminary data from two weeks of stay-at-home orders in California and Washington show.

Those states were the first to report community cases of covid-19 and also the first in the nation to mandate residents stay at home to keep physically apart. Analyses from academics and federal and local officials indicate those moves bought those communities precious time — and also may have “flattened the curve” of infections for the long haul.

Most people are familiar with "Stacey's Mom" and little else, but he wrote a lot of good songs.

                              • Well, in just two weeks this analysis by Richard Epstein hasn't aged well at all.

                                Coronavirus Perspective

The most dramatic news of the day has been the sudden spike in the number of Italian cases, totaling 24,747 with 1,809 deaths, which may grow to exceed the 3,099 in China.

Overlooked is the good news coming out of China, where the latest report shows 16 new cases and 14 new deaths, suggesting that the number of deaths in the currently unresolved group will be lower than the 5.3 percent conversion rate in the cases resolved to date. In my view, we will see a similar decline in Italy, for reasons that I shall outline in the remainder of this article.

From this available data, it seems more probable than not that the total number of cases world-wide will peak out at well under 1 million, with the total number of deaths at under 50,000 (up about eightfold). In the United States, if the total death toll increases at about the same rate, the current 67 deaths should reach about 5000 (or twn percent of my estimated world total, which may also turn out to be low). [See correction & addendum at the end of this essay.]

                                . . . . . . . .

                                Correction & Addendum, added March 24, 2020:

That estimate is ten times greater than the 500 number I erroneously put in the initial draft of the essay, and it, too, could prove somewhat optimistic. But any possible error rate in this revised projection should be kept in perspective. The current U.S. death toll stands at 592 as of noon on March 24, 2020, out of about 47,000 cases. So my adjusted figure, however tweaked, remains both far lower, and I believe far more accurate, than the common claim that there could be a million dead in the U.S. from well over 150 million coronavirus cases before the epidemic runs its course.
This type of happy talk was driving U.S. policy.

The known numbers right now: Overall cases: 935,581; Overall deaths: 47,223; U.S. deaths: 5,109
