I used to want to be an epidemiologist. I even read the Hot Zone and 3/4th of the Coming Plague (long slog, that one)!Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostIs this your field? I didn't know you were an epidemiologist.
Can I still comment on this thread?"...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Do you think it's possible for you to post without using words like "hilarious," "absurd," "canard," and "truther"? Your bare assertions do not make it so. Maybe your reasoning is too stunted and your vocabulary is too limited to go without these epithets."

I'm sure I know as much or even more about it than this guy did a week ago.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostI read this. I’m glad they’re still hopeful that they can prevent such high volume of deaths.
We were talking about Iceland. Apparently you know more than what the epidemiologists have to say about Iceland.

nobody was trying to be funny. if you don’t understand why iceland does not provide a helpful example for whatever point it is you’re trying to make here (that’s not “this is a hard problem that people should think about”), you should probably avoid questioning others’ qualifications.

I remember you said this wouldn't hurt the economy because it would only affect hot dog vendors. When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

yes, i read the week old bloomberg summary of a summary of old data of a genetically and culturally homogeneous island nation. by the way, that expert article concludes that transmission by asymptomatic carriers would be extremely alarming.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostI was quoting experts. Trying to make sense of the data.

Still need better data. From an extensive analysis of data from different regions of the world, our best estimate at the current time for the case fatality ratio of COVID-19 in China is 1·38% (95% CrI 1·23–1·53). Although this value remains lower than estimates for other coronaviruses, including SARS24 and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), 25 it is substantially higher than estimates from the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic.26, 27

Holy crap! So many of you have been sick this year. Let me ask if you typically get sick sometime over the winter. Seems like I get sick every 2-3 years sometime in the winter. I wouldn't be surprised to learn there's another virus that mimics the symptoms of this coronavirus. Perhaps a particular flu strain?
