Long delays in getting test results hobble coronavirus response

Test results for the novel coronavirus are taking so long to come back across the United States that experts say the results are often proving useless in the campaign to control the deadly disease.

Some testing sites are struggling to provide results in five to seven days. Others are taking even longer. Outbreaks across the Sun Belt have strained labs beyond capacity. That rising demand, in turn, has caused shortages of swabs, chemical reagents and equipment as far away as New York.

The long testing turnaround times are making it impossible for America to replicate the central strategy used by other countries to effectively contain the virus — test, trace and isolate. Like catching any killer, speed is of the essence when it comes to the coronavirus.

I'm the guy who extols the Canadian health care system here, warts and all. But the fact that we are screwing up nationwide testing for COVID-19 when other countries have figured it out honestly makes me despondent. There are multiple other failures of government and health care system that the pandemic has laid bare. But we can't even test properly, even after half a year of dealing with this. I can't even comprehend how big a failure this is for the supposed best health care system in the world. I mean, really?!? What good is freedom in our system if we can't properly test for a pandemic?

I know I'm not going to convert many to the rest of the developed world and accept a more socialized version of health care. But this is just so embarrassing. Does anyone think that if the government had a more centralized role in health care, that they would do worse than we are at testing? Assuming of course, that we had a competent government? Hell, even dream boy Trudeau is more competent at this than we are.

This is all just so disappointing. It really feels like the beginning of the end of American exceptionalism. Yeah I know it sounds hyperbolic. But I'm exhausted after 6 months of fiasco after fiasco.

To be at this point after all we've gone through is abhorrent. I simply can't believe it. I have no doubt that even under a more centralized healthcare system, djt would have screwed this pooch just as "bigly."

I don't know how you screw it up. If you are positive, you are shedding millions of viruses and your nasal passage has to be lousy with them. Just get some snot on that swab and you're good.
