It’s a sideshow as an obstacle to reopening the economy—which is what the media is trying to argue—for various reasons. One is that testing will be to a level that everyone agrees is good enough by May though it will be still patchy (this appears to be a result-oriented conclusion). Another is that not everyone will be tested. Another is the high rate of false negatives. Another is that therefore it’s only one of the tools that will be used to try to limit infection after the economy opens. Another is that antibody testing is just not an obstacle to reopening the economy at all, though it helps determine the death rate and odds of various demographics dying of the infection. Antibody testing can’t identify recently infected people. Another is that as a practical matter we’re going to wind up like Sweden is, as everyone will.

The media and some on the left are only complaining about testing as an excuse to delay opening the economy. It’s not really an issue.

the big winner in this... Medicaid and Medicare .... and to some extent commercial health insurance. You have tons of people not getting surgeries and not going to the doctor which results in big profits for Health Insurance. Select Health and other provider based insurance won't do all that well due to them being used to pay people who are not workings salary. Its the health insurance like, United, BCBS & Centene that will make the record profits

Whole-heartedly disagree (but I know Gladwell is an entertainer and prone to exaggeration). Even if we had a million ventilators and never ending gowns/masks we'd still be social distancing and the economy would still be taking a beating...although maybe a little less so. We wouldn't have the hospital capacity to handle a full on outbreak and hospital capacity isn't just millions of dollars.

But he's correct in that this might accelerate some changes that are long needed. I don't think oil will be replaced but people are realizing that working from home is feasible and in some cases preferred. I've enjoyed not spending two hours each day commuting. My employer has also found out that I probably don't have to travel back to HQ once or twice a month since most work can be done remotely.

He is a good writer and particularly articulate in these types of situations, but I agree with your assessment that his responses are exaggerated ... that's why I honed in on the transcript of that particular segment: it's highly effective button pushing.
