SU was a HUGE Palin cheerleader/apologist back when she was picked by McCain. You should have seen him spin.Originally posted by Jarid in Cedar View PostPlease don't. David Gergen was on Anderson Cooper 360 last night and provided three rational reasons why Palin may have stepped down and dismissed the possibility that there was a rational reason for Palin's resignation that could explain an improvement of her 2012 chances.
I forget one of the reasons (didn't stick out to me- could have been something like she's sick of the scrutiny and just tired of it all) but here are the other two:
1. Palin just signed a book deal and stands to make a ton of money over the next while if she resigns from her duties as governor of Alaska. This makes a lot of sense. She needs to strike while the iron is still hot.
2. There are scandals floating out there that we don't know about that may come to light.
I read the VF article posted by DDD, and I wouldn't be surprised if Palin thinks she's improving her 2012 chances because she can camp out in Iowa over the next 2 and a half years. Palin really is that impulsive and dumb. I agree with Gergen that there's no rational reason why this could improve her chances, but that leaves open the possibility of an irrational reason. Irrational and dumb people sometimes make inexplicable decisions.Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Palin is about to be indicted on corruption and embezzlement charges. This is according to multiple possibly reliable sources. As mayor of Wasilla she awarded a 13 million dollar contract to a company that built her a home in exchange. Todd Palin claims to have built the home with a few of his "buddies." There are no building permit records, since Palin did away with building permits as mayor. There are also rumors that federal investigators have been obtaining documents from the contractor for the last few months.Last edited by SoonerCoug; 07-04-2009, 04:06 PM.That which may be asserted without evidence may be dismissed without evidence. -C. a big hearty LOL to all the saps that voted for her because she was just another Joo Six Peeack from Main Street USA. Thank goodness she never wore overalls during the campaign. Who knows how many more votes she would have received?....
Nailin' Sarah Palin, indeed.
Good for her, though. At least nobody will be talking about her kids for awhile.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Assuming Sooner is correct, this actually makes me really sad. We had talked last year about the rumors of shady dealings and connections to Ted Stevens and such, but it seemed very Huffpo wishful thinking. Perhaps not so much. But either way, here's what bothers me:
I hate the idea of The Religious Right steering the Republican Party, because frankly it distracts from the issues. But the arrangement is dangerous for religion as well, because the decisions those politicians make end up reflecting -- for better or worse -- on the faithful. Their actions impact how unbelievers view religion and the religious. And in a case like this, when the foremost object of the Religious Right's fervent adulation is suspected of corruption, the cynics only become all the more cynical. I don't know who it is that appoints certain politicians as the voice of the Religious Right, but in doing so the rest of the religious are done a considerable disservice.

I honestly don't know if it's true, but it is a rampant rumor all over the internet. I guess part of the idea is that the price of the hockey rink/sports arena was artificially inflated in exchange for gifts (building a home). That which may be asserted without evidence may be dismissed without evidence. -C. The trouble is that the Republicans hitched their wagon to the religious right which helped them win in 2000 with GWB. Now that the religious right feels that they were instrumental in winning that particular election, they feel they are the rudder for the party as a whole.Originally posted by Babs View PostAssuming Sooner is correct, this actually makes me really sad. That hockey rink was a huge question mark last year. The cost was astronomical. There were other oddities, too - train routes built to nowhere and whathaveyou. I wouldn't be surprised if it's true that she's at least under investigation - there's plenty to exploit, and no doubt there's somebody with a vendetta that would love to take her down, legitimately or otherwise.Originally posted by SoonerCoug View PostI honestly don't know if it's true, but it is a rampant rumor all over the internet.
