She wants her and her family out of the spotlight.

I think the Letterman saga showed her that political power and influence isn't worth dragging her family through the mud.

I agree with AA. Unfortunately for Palin, she and her family will be targeted for the rest of their lives simply because she put herself and her family in the first place.

What a second, she was positioning herself (some say) for a Presidential run in 4 years and then quits the game when some t.v. personality makes a personal attack? Sheesh, I wonder what she thought the spotlight was going to be like.

Why not finish out her term though? It seems odd

I am happy that she is withdrawing from the limelight......now perhaps a more moderate figure can come back into the Republican putative-leader-in-the-making role.

The decisions she has been making lately, when viewed from a political standpoint, are not wise. I think she has been making decisions not as a politician, but as a wife and mother. She didn't go to bat against Letterman to score points. She did it to protect her daughter. I think resigning as governor has less to do with setting the stage than with guarding the nest.

We in the ranks have very little understanding of the personal cost to high profile figures. Their personal lives are ever in public eye. Privacy is a luxury forgone.

What would you like her to be more moderate about?

You guys are killing me. There is more to this story, there has to be. And I certainly wouldn't assume that a 2012 run ended with her stepping down. I would assume that somehow she feels this improves her chances.

Alaska is a graveyard of political careers. They always end up hating their governors. Governors rarely serve two terms; rarely win re-election. See what happened to all of them over the past 30 years. Murkowski lost to her in the primaries. The only one I can think of who won a second term purportedly stuffed the ballot box and won in a narrow election. She has nothing but something to lose staying in that job. She's gotten all she can out of it. It's a good move. She's on to bigger and better thigns including probably a career as a national poitician. She needs to get out of Alaska or she's done for.

                      Correct.

                        Once again, WRONG.

Remember the guy who ran for vice-president against Reagan in 1984?

Of course not. And nobody will remember Sarah Palin either.

That's what I'm saying. I don't think it improves her chances. I think she's acting as a mother and not as a politician.
