Oh boy. I feel like I am taking crazy pills.

The statement that started this discussion was:

Donald Trump is now talking about suspending elections. I'm not sure anyone is going to stop him
If you can name a few people who would not stop him, congratulations. But that is NOT equivalent to the statement in question essentially stating that NOBODY would likely stop him.

Let's extend this paranoid world view a little further, shall we?

"Trump is going to cancel the entire constitution and I am not sure anyone is going to stop him".

"Trump is going to start carrying a gun and shooting people he doesn't like and I am not sure anyone is going to stop him."

"Trump is going to send all LGBT people to the gas chamber and I am not sure anyone is going to stop him."

"Trump is going to execute all democratic politicians and I am not sure anyone is going to stop him."

Do you see how crazy that sounds? If any of you seriously think that nobody would try to stop him if he attempted to cancel elections - the bedrock of democracy - you have allowed politics to erode your capacity for rational thought.

And by the way, Moliere mentioned the federal reserve example. Jeanine Pirro (a shameless Trump toady) did announce last week that the that DOJ was opening a criminal investigation into Jerome Powell, thus attempting to politicize the federal reserve - a dangerous precedent that would destroy faith in American financial institutions. The blowback from both democrats and republicans was swift, forcing Pirro to walk it back and essentially say "just kidding". Trump pretended it wasn't his idea (I am sure it was) and he let her hang out to dry.

    • Man that CNN article is chock full of juicy recriminations. Sounds like Pirro is being hung out to dry.
"...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Do you think it's possible for you to post without using words like "hilarious," "absurd," "canard," and "truther"? Your bare assertions do not make it so. Maybe your reasoning is too stunted and your vocabulary is too limited to go without these epithets."

There a some sarcasm in my post with a hint of indignation. However, my point was to take an ultra-sensitive stance on this to demonstrate how loonie some of these comments become over stupid shit.

          • Good grief. This extreme notion of fearing for their lives. What’s next. You will “report” someone on behalf of Trump tried to take their life.”

The throwing of fear mongering has switched sides. Thinking we will just believe you has left this building. You have little to no credibility as you throw your extremism on every wall in the house trying to make it stick. When all that is left is a house full of shit-splattered walls.

So no one was actually saying "hang Mike Pence?"

They were. The video of it is widely available.

You don't think it could have gotten really ugly with some members of Congress probably killed had they not all evacuated the the floor minutes before the mob broke through?

Yes, plenty of them were in fear while it was happening, including the Republicans.

Framing it as a coup attempt is just as big a stretch as framing it as hapless patriotic tourists. There was no mechanism or path to overthrow the government. It was a bunch of dopes, ranging from bad actors to the curious who took being pissed off too far. Yes, some probably would have punched out some lawmakers had they been given the chance. That's not the same as it being a coup.

Kremlin says Putin has been invited to join Trump’s Gaza ‘board of peace’

The Kremlin has announced that Vladimir Putin has been invited to join Donald Trump’s “board of peace”, set up last week with the intention that it would oversee a ceasefire in Gaza ...

.. The claimed invitation comes as Putin shows no signs of ending his invasion of Ukraine, in which hundreds of thousands have been killed and Russian troops have carried out multiple atrocities against civilians. The Russian president has repeatedly rejected proposals of ceasefire along the current frontines.

Agreed, it was a bunch of dopes, ranging from bad actors to stupid followers. At the same there was a clear effort to challenge and nullify the electors from certain states that voted for Biden and replace them with electors that would vote for Trump. That was an effort to "overthrow" the certified will of the voters. That's a coup attempt IMO, even if it was stupid and dopey in its conception and implementation.

                          • It's not hyperbole. I can point you in the direction of material that informed my opinion.

Of course not all the protestors were there for malicious ends. But individuals like Roger Stone, Stewart Rhodes and Enrique Tario are terrible people who were not involved just to protest.

Additionally, we know the fake electors scheme, was a fraudulent plan to steal the election. That is not conjecture. Without that element, I don't know if I'd feel comfortable calling it a coup attempt.

This is not intended as an insult but if your primary sources of information were sources like Tucker Carlson's maliciously edited documentary, I'd think the same you do.

Also, my opinion isn't controversial even if you have a different one, maybe hold off on the condescending eyeroll.

They wanted to whip up the crowd into a frenzy and use that to scare Pence and congress into gumming up the works. It could've worked too.

Consider all the twit Representatives who refused to certify the results.

The best predictor of future behaviors is past behaviors which is one reason I think there will be shenanigans involved in the upcoming elections.
