I'm fine with the last sentence. But I have strong reservations about the apparent approach they're taking, shutting things down and imposing mass layoffs without doing a hard analysis of what's fat and what's vital or at least useful. Many of the hatchet men are brilliant post-adolescents with zero familiarity with government. The principle of Chesterton's Fence is vital here--don't tear down a fence that seems unnecessary unless you have a clear understanding of why it was built. But Trump and Elon love headlines and that's what they're getting with their sledgehammer approach.

Like PAC, I agree with your final sentence. I disagree with the notion that what they're doing is "something meaningful to try and address the deficit."

      • We have an unelected wealthy bureaucrat single-handedly managing government agencies and budgets. How this not the same deep state these folks have been whining about?

Good points. They're also doing it in a blatantly unconstitutional way, and it's scary how much Republicans don't care about that. It's like they fully wanted to elect a dictator to take a hatchet to the Constitution.

This won’t address the deficit. Trumps proposed tax cuts will more than offset any cost savings DOGE creates.

Well, technically the Trump tax cuts have to be budget neutral to qualify for passing under reconciliation. The current budget trajectory was already going to add that amount to the federal deficit.

So, some flim flam. HIs last tax cuts ballooned the budget by $8 trillion.
                Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

                  • Expect inflation to start to kick up. Steel and aluminum are pretty important and these tariffs will be worldwide.

Ha, I misspoke. $2.5 trillion from the tax cuts. Over $8 trillion overall due to Trump.

Proposed tax cuts will cost between $5 trillion to $11 trillion.

At finding $50,000 here for a DEI program in Honduras and $1 million there for cultural outreach in Myanmar, Elon isn't going to find anywhere near $500 billion to offset these cuts, let alone the somewhere around $8 trillion needed this year, over even the $2.5 trillion to offset the previous tax cuts.

The economy crashing will hurt his clout to a good extent, but it's disgusting how the Republicans are going right along with an obvious assumption of dictatorship.

JD Vance said the courts cant stop the legitimate exercise of the executive power. And, to a certain extent, they can't and shouldn't.

But illegitimate uses? To courts, stopping that is just another Tuesday. Or has Vance suddenly started believing that the Supreme Court of the 5th Circuit was wrong to act the way it has been the last 4 years?

Trump is a dictator and will act like one unless stopped

Agreed on the DOGE stuff not making a dent. It’s SS and Medicare that need reform/cuts but that’s political suicide for anyone so it’ll never happen.

The cost of the tax cuts is just what would happen if the cuts expired. I don’t think any middle class people want their tax rates to go up and neither do rich people so I’m pretty sure keeping the tax cuts will probably be a political win for Trump.
