I listened to a news report discussing one of the candidates for President in France on my drive in to work. They had a clip from a speech she gave in which she was saying she would stop ALL immigration, both legal and illegal. Of course, she also spoke of getting France out of the EU, and getting back to having their own currency and closed borders that not just anyone can pass through.

Again, there is not one contiguous wall/fence. There are a number of walls/fences/barriers throughout the West Bank to provide security.

Sadly, the effect has been the ghettoization of Palestinians in the West Bank. A tragic irony for the Jewish State.
I realize that. And I said "Israel put up the wall in places to purposely separate palestinian areas from other palestinian areas to make live harder, so yes I am against the wall as israel built it." I dont think the primary purpose being security is mutually exclusive with this. Israeli leaders have been documented many times that a goal is to have the Palestinians voluntarily disperse from Israel and the territories as much as possible, and making life harder is one of the methods of doing so. If Israel was interested in furthering the 2 state solution, the wall(s) would have been built on intelligible boundaries.

It is true that one consequence is that they and other security measures (closed roads and checkpoints) do make travel between Palestinian population centers in the West Bank more difficult than it would normally be. But that is not the purpose of the walls/fences.
The fact that the wall (yes, there are multiple, but you know the one we are talking about) just happened to capture the best farmland and water sources on the Israeli side of the fence was just a happy coincidence! This includes the property of many Palestinians who had lived peacefully with the Israelis and never caused any problems. Tough luck, Amir.

I know you were joking. So was I!

There are multiple indications that the Trump administration wants to form political boards to vet all public communications by agency scientists before they can be released to the public. This is more than a temporary thing. And the prospect of that is serious enough to warrant outcry from the scientists and the public.

          • So the Mexican president cancels his meeting with Trump and now...

White House spokesman says Trump seeks 20% tax on Mexican imports to pay for border wall

The White House has offered some details on how the border wall between the United States and Mexico might be paid for.

Spokesman Sean Spicer tells reporters that President Donald Trump wants to see a 20 percent tax on imports from Mexico to pay for the wall. Earlier today, Mexico's president announced that he wouldn't be coming to Washington next week for a planned summit with Trump. Trump today had tweeted that if Mexico isn't willing to pay for the wall, the meeting should be canceled.

I think that's semantics at this point when we're talking about OUR economy which is based on free-enterprise. Necessity comes by way of getting an edge on the competition inherent in this kind of system.

That's partially correct. The only help somebody with no papers can qualify for is emergency medicare (medicaid?). It doesn't come into play that often. The only relief they would have that somebody would look down their nose at would be something like their U.S. citizen children qualifying for WIC or food stamps.

Obama was very aggressive at sending illegals home compared to previous administrations. This is also well documented despite what people like Trump say.
Obama was an absolute nightmare for deportations-- deported more than all other presidents combined, IIRC. Trump even used this fact to slam him at a campaign event in Florida (september 2016?) but didn't really circle back to that particular set of talking points after that.

And you are right about a general reticence to apply for any government anything for fear of making a blip on the radar, anecdotally.

The system is uneven because some are playing by different rules.

If we had reasonable work visas so that full registration and taxes could be paid, then you'd have a fair and even playing field. Where some hire under the table and others do not, that encourages almost everybody to circumvent the legitimate system. It doesn't create reasonable accountability by allowing for illegal immigration.

                            • Could the trumpster actually get Mexico to pay for the wall?

                              http://money.cnn.com/2017/01/25/news...ttances-trump/

Remittances to Mexico is the largest contributor to their economy. This would be a huge hit to their economy if he started taxing the remittances at 20%.
