New York Times: White House reached out to South Dakota governor about adding Trump to Mount Rushmore

White House aides reached out to South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem last year about the process of adding additional presidents to Mount Rushmore, the New York Times reported.

According to a person familiar who spoke with the Times, Noem then greeted Trump when he arrived in the state for his July Fourth celebrations at the monument with a four-foot replica of Mount Rushmore that included his face.

Noem has noted before Trump's "dream" to have his face on Mount Rushmore, the Coolidge-era sculpture that features the 60-foot-tall faces of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt.

According to a 2018 interview with Noem, the two struck up a conversation about the sculpture in the Oval Office during their first meeting, where she initially thought he was joking. "I started laughing," she said. "He wasn't laughing, so he was totally serious." "He said, 'Kristi, come on over here. Shake my hand, and so I shook his hand, and I said, 'Mr. President, you should come to South Dakota sometime. We have Mount Rushmore.' And he goes, 'Do you know it's my dream to have my face on Mount Rushmore?'"

Trump also toyed with the idea of adding himself to Mount Rushmore in 2017 at a campaign rally in Youngstown, Ohio.

It's depressing that in an election year, Trump doesn't feel the need to even hide his racism. It's no coincidence that this comes on the heels of Biden picking Harris as his running mate. He's pandering to the bigotry of so many of his constituents. In 2016 he was going to keep us safe from the murderers and rapists south of the border. This time he's going to keep us safe from black politicians who are going to let black people move into your neighborhood.

Yeah. I think what will prove to be the difference this time is: 1. A more energized Democratic/Indie voter base and 2. Trump fatigue among the center fringe of his voting block. They may not even bother.

I will say that a Biden/Harris ticket seems way more exciting after 4 years of Trump than a Clinton/Kaine ticket did after 8 years of Obama...

True. But I'm not thinking about the 30-35% of the population that want djt on the Mount Rushmore. I'm thinking more about those people in the middle that took a flyer on djt four years ago and 1) are still leaning that way but impressionable and 2) those that have moved away from djt but might still be coaxed back because they fear Biden might actually hurt God.
