President Trump: Making America Great Again...

I'm saying things will get bad if his dopey anti-trade ideas get through Congress. He hasn't done anything yet that directly affects the economy. But even you would not like paying 45% more at the grocery store, which is what a 45% tariff would do. The good thing is you could stomach that where most of the people who like Trump the most could not.Last edited by BlueK; 01-25-2017, 12:20 PM.

That's a fair point, but all of his salutary effect on the economy si based on expectations and not actual results. Those expectations can flip very, very quickly.Originally posted by byu71 View PostThe Dow Jones is over 20,000 and almost all of the gain in the market for 2016 came after Trump was elected.
I will agree with his being a dip shit, egomaniac, insecure, etc. I really don't care for the guy.
That said, I hope none of you who are warning us about how bad things are going to be economically will be offended that I would put you right along the gold doomsdayers who have been on TV since 2009 while the market triples.
I won't quite be as big a jerk to put you in the group I called idiots who pushed the futures down 700 points when they could see he was being elected.
There is plenty to rip him on. If you are going to rip him on his effect on the economy, well you probably ought to go to cash.PLesa excuse the tpyos.

You're bullish on Trump's policies after one week of his presidency? No doubt you were similarly impressed with the ~150% Dow increase during the Obama administration...Originally posted by byu71 View PostThe Dow Jones is over 20,000 and almost all of the gain in the market for 2016 came after Trump was elected.

You may be right. If I was totally sure I wouldn't be sitting on the cash I am. It is a lot less than before Trump got elected though. I may not get the last laugh.Originally posted by BlueK View PostI'm saying things will get bad if his dopey anti-trade ideas get through Congress. Again, please take this in the smiling spirit I am giving it. Some of you remind me of CJ when it comes to his talking about the Utes. His hatred clouds his thought process and thus you have to take what he says or predicts about the Utes with a grain of salt.
Another example would be Hannity and Pres. Obama. I stopped watching him because no matter what Pres. Obama did, it was bad in Hannitys eyes.

Come on. REALLY. His policies have only been known for a week? You are quite a bit smarter than that.Originally posted by Northwestcoug View PostYou're bullish on Trump's policies after one week of his presidency? Yes, I am glad Pres. Obama did enough to keep the economy a float with the help of the Fed.

In this case it's pretty simple: trade war = very bad. I get what you're saying about Hannity and Obama, but there are very few things the government can do to the economy that could be worse than this. Fortunately it hasn't happened yet and I still have faith in the college educated GOP members of Congress to oppose terrible trade policy.Originally posted by byu71 View PostYou may be right. Very true. I suggest the Trump haters sit on their cash until they are sure his policies are going to work.Originally posted by creekster View PostThat's a fair point, but all of his salutary effect on the economy si based on expectations and not actual results. Agree and if you will go back, I don't expect you to, you will see I was always pushing and hoping for a Rebuplican Congress. After that I couldn't have cared less if HRC won.Originally posted by BlueK View PostIn this case it's pretty simple: trade war = very bad. Right now I am not so sure it wouldn't be better if she had won.

I think I'll hang tight until the anti-trade bill comes forward. Then I promise I will move all my money out of equities until that blows over because the wall street types will freak out if it really looks like a trade war is imminent. Too many industries depend on open global markets.Originally posted by byu71 View PostVery true. I suggest the Trump haters sit on their cash until they are sure his policies are going to work.

I'm just laughing at your blanket statement how all of us are wrong about his policies because the Dow hit 20000. We have A LOT of anti-trade rhetoric to worry about, even with the recent good economic news. I would have thought you would be more cautious than that.Originally posted by byu71 View PostCome on. I am just engaging here, I really don't want to be a jerk to you.Originally posted by BlueK View PostThe TPP wasn't around long enough yet to have that much impact. Combine that with getting out of all our other free trade agreements and slap a tariff on top of that, and it will not be pretty.
However, I heard some of the same talk when Brexit happened. In fact in know of some money managers that moved to large cash positions. They had terrible performances. Average hedge fund did about 3%.
Again though when it comes to the economy and market I have been well schooled personally to know I can't call the short term.

It's funny that everyone is surprised that he was serious (that includes me). We just all assume a politician is lying when they promise crazy stuff. Too bad he's not a politicianOriginally posted by imanihonjin View PostMy biggest concern now is that he has been serious all along about his protectionist tax policies. I had hoped beyond hope that he was merely saying that to get the rust belt to buy in, but perhaps he really meant it and is intending to do it.
