For a decade, Putin’s government, regarded as a chief adversary of the U.S., has been accused of efforts to influence American elections. Attempts by Russia to make inroads with the Trumps before the 2016 election exploded into controversy that dogged much of the president’s first term.

To access it, voters need to enter in their first name, last name, and either their ID number or the last 4 of their social. Trump's declaration that the AI concerns raised by Amodei, Huang, and other tech leaders are a "hoax" is a major problem. Trump is a dope on tech and many other issues, and his dismissal of so many other things as hoaxes (climate, Russia, election integrity, etc.), shows an appalling lack of intellectual curiosity and supreme self-confidence where none is deserved. Nothing in politics is Manichean, and Trump's consistent demonization of things he might not agree with is stupid and dangerous.

And only the most hopeless Trump fan will take comfort from his declaration that, “The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!” It remains hard for me to believe our society could make that charlatan the most powerful man in the world.

I will say this: these companies (Anthropic especially) have a habit of "leaking" stories of rogue agents being frighteningly smart and devious. I think part of that is a marketing strategy (look how smart our models are!).

China’s a huge risk, and we need thoughtful, intelligent leaders, comfortable with nuance and not focused on self-interest to deal with risks while making the most of emerging technologies. Unfortunately, Trump is none of those things.
