I think this is interesting.

Because, quite honestly, I think that the reason Trump won was more for the items highlighted (free markets, free trade, small government, deregulation...) are what carried Trump into the White House.

I won't deny that some racist SOB's voted for him too. But if it were just the racists he never would've made it out of the GOP primary.

I think, in general, the center of society is seeing government as being at least as likely to mess things up as it is to help. Maybe it's just me, but I think people are tiring of the nanny state mentality of the government taking care of everything and making the important decisions for everyone.

Promising to break NAFTA and other free trade agreements and slap tariffs on everyone is not free trade or free markets. That's what he campaigned on along with the hyper anti-immigrant and foreigner stuff. The fact that people who believe in smaller government, free markets and free trade voted for him anyway, isn't because of anything he said he'd do. Those folks just voted against the democrats or they weren't listening to what Trump was actually saying.

Montenegro has strategic geographical location value for NATO. Russia pushed hard against them joining, to the point that Russian operatives were arrested for planning a coup/assassination of the pro-Western Montenegrin leader.

Montenegran is an insignificant country that only spends 1.6% of its nothing of a GDP on defense. Adding this country would just drag more US money into NATO which we would get little or nothing in return. The US already spends way too much on NATO and most of the other countries in NATO haven't been pulling their weight for some time. Anybody that bitches about the amount of money we spend on the defense budget should be against this.

On the other hand if you are a 20th century cold war munger like McCain then you might like the idea of adding a little more real estate to the NATO footprint.

What's a war munger? Montenegro's position on the Adriatic coast is important and valuable. Whether you like it or not, Russia is still a huge threat to their neighbors. NATO is effective in restraining them. The narrative that if the US or NATO went away, Russia would turn in to an upstanding citizen is a load of bullshit. NATO is still relevant, and Montenegro deserved to join.
