I think all this tariff stuff by Trump is mostly an attempt to get partner nations in line and have more equitable/reciprocal trade agreements. My jury is out as to how much damage, if any, the tariffs will do. I've already heard that Canada is already negotiating with the Trump administration to bring things in line. It will be interesting to see how it plays out and ultimately affects my bottom line.

He loved the Soviets because they made him feel important. If he wanted to be like Reagan he wouldn't gut NATOOriginally posted by Donuthole View Post
I'm sure he'd love for us to be like Reagan's USA, but if being East Germany is what it takes to make it feel like 1987 again, I think he'll take it.

This is ludicrous. Trump governs according to his whims. He has no grand strategy. Some of his instincts are correct. He's an asshole about them, but some of them are correct. Tarrifs aren't. How much money has been erased in the market today. Even if he back tracks, which he likely will because he touched a hot oven, damage has been done he won't reverse.Originally posted by Shaka View PostI think all this tariff stuff by Trump is mostly an attempt to get partner nations in line and have more equitable/reciprocal trade agreements. Now the commerce secretary is saying he thinks a deal with Canada will be reached today but his comments come across as partially wishful thinking. I have read other reports that Trump and his team have been getting a lot of pleading from the business community and other Republicans to not go through with it. The continuous back and forth is of itself bad not just for the stock market but also for companies who have to plan with accurate information of their costs. Trump I am certain loves the attention and pleading. He is such garbage. I am to the point of hoping the tariffs stick so the economy does crash and gives a hit to his influence over his idiot cult following.Originally posted by USUC View Post

Tariffs are bad, damaging, idiotic policy. I don't care who wants them. It was bad that Biden kept some of Trump's tariffs and it came back to bite him when there was an inflation problem. I said so at the timeOriginally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post

Generally, I agree (and strongly agree that Trump's tariffs are really stupid), but occasionally targeted tariffs make sense. One example--although the U.S. has laws (not always vigorously enforced, to be sure) against predatory pricing, loss leaders, monopolies, etc., foreign competitors may not have similar restraints so the U.S. may impose tariffs to offset trade practices that would be unlawful here, Such tariffs should be employed with precision and careful analysis, skill sets foreign to Trump.Originally posted by BlueK View Post

Right. Some countries subsidize production of something, like corn in the US, or China and Japan with Aluminum. In those cases, tariffs make sense.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View Post

It'll be interesting to see what happens to the serious thinkers on the right who scolded people for Trump Derangement Syndrome the first time around. Everyone's been inoculated with his batshit crazy ideas, first from press conferences then official Oval Office addresses. I guess it hits a little differently when it's coming from the SOTU in the House, at least when other countries see it. Alluding to taking the Panama Canal and Greenland by force, brazenly lying about fraud in social security and how much DOGE has saved, confusing transgenic mice with transgender studies, etc., etc.. Who will be the first serious person on the right to sane-wash all of that?"...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Do you think it's possible for you to post without using words like "hilarious," "absurd," "canard," and "truther"? Your bare assertions do not make it so. Maybe your reasoning is too stunted and your vocabulary is too limited to go without these epithets."

Trump comes out against American manufacturing and technological independence in the SOTU
"You should get rid of the Chips Act and whatever is left over, Mr. Speaker, you should use it to reduce debt."
CHIPS and Science Act provided $52 billion in funding to stregthen the US semiconductor industry. Like 2 days ago, Trump was crowing about TSMC's plan for a semiconductor plant. That plant, of course, was made possible by the CHIPS Act. It provided $6.6 billion in direct funding, $5 billion in loans.. and was announced by Biden in November 2024.
So, to sum up, the CHIPS Act brought manufacturing to America, improved our competitiveness with foreign rivals, and made us less reliant on global trade. And yet Trump wants it gone.

He consistently makes decisions that act against our national interests and in favor of our adversaries. Evidence and theories relating to his being compromised by Russia in particular is not new.Originally posted by LVAllen View PostTrump comes out against American manufacturing and technological independence in the SOTU

The people want feel justification in carrying on with scolding and eye rolling need to come up with explanation for why he is doing things. If TDS is real, it pertains to those who tie themselves in knots trying to make Trump seem rational and good.
He never was a good leader, businessmen, or person
