This whole kerfuffle started out as an exercise in harm reduction from Trump exposure. Even if Polievre or any other Trumpy candidate became PM, I'm on a literal and metaphorical (far 'left coast' politically) island. It takes a while to feel those winds.
Wait, you left the country??? I didn't realize how much I've been out of it lately.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

    • A couple of months ago I moved half my TSP into bonds. I'll have to decide how far down to let it go before putting it back in stocks.

I turn 73 this year and thus have to take an RMD, the amount of which is determined by the total market price of my tax-deferred accounts on 12/31 last year So now I have to sell some positions that are at lower prices to meet the RMD minimum. And unless one needs the cash sooner, one usually waits until the end of the year for maximum tax-deferred growth. But given theTrump-caused market turmoil, I'm being told I might was well take the RMD sooner, rather than later, as there's no reason to think the market will be higher at year's end. So much winning.

I continue to marvel at Trump supporters who think he's brilliant and that these disruptive, groundless, and scattershot tariffs and other economic moves are part of a grand 4-D chess strategy. They aren't and anyone who believes Trump and Navarro really know what they're doing is very sadly mistaken.

Obviously you are not a student of my posts...

I moved to Vancouver Island about a week ago.If all goes according to plan, this will be where I retire.

            • Thinking about the Trump campaign promises designed to influence his non-core base:
              • bringing prices down on day 1
              • ending the Russo/Ukraine conflict after winning and before he takes office
              • ending the Israel/Hamas conflict
              • Concept of a healthcare plan
If he had campaigned with his current talking points instead, does he win?
              • there will be “a period of transition” when it comes to inflation. Don’t talk about egg prices, and don’t watch the stock market.
              • we’ll take months, and alienate the entire European continent to try and make Ukraine surrender in order to end the conflict
              • let’s turn GAZA into Mar-a-Gaza, and send the Palestinians “somewhere else”
              • the only healthcare impact so far is a republican budget proposal that cuts hundreds of billions from Medicaid, and a measles outbreak
Did we ever get a timetable on how long we need to chill and see how things play out?

That was just BS put out by those who voted for Trump and have no real answers to the shit that Trump is raining down on America.
                Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

                • It's got to be getting harder and harder to ignore Trump's capitulation to Russia. He said in an interview that he wanted to cut the defense budget in half.
The sky kind of is falling. Every military and foreign policy move this administration makes favors Russia

In my most skeptical frame of mind I can’t fathom any reason he’d want to tank the economy since that clearly will end his, and any GOPers, ability to win an election. Of course, with Trump there may be an irrational reason.

I take Trump at his words that he really believes tariffs are the way to go. It’s a stupid idea and breaks any economic sense, but he’s not a smart person so he likely believes it. But economics are like laws of nature. You can’t just change them by waving a magic wand. Tariffs will result in price increases just like flooding the economy with trillions of dollars results in price increases.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. • Trump et al are defending the tariffs as being necessary because we're being ripped off by Canada and Mexico. I vote we hang the people responsible for the 2018 trade agreement that replaced NAFTA . If you're in need of a powerful emetic, read this bloviated White House announcement touting the 2018 agreement (..."the most modern, up-to-date, and balanced trade agreement in the history of our country") has now apparently necessitated the new tariffs. Over the past 40 years, Trump has been like the smart ass in school who never put in the work but was so groundlessly confident in own instincts and his ability to bullshit instructors and others that he could skate through anything. And now we're paying the price.

                        • Dude gets handed one of the strongest economies in the world and all he has to do is nothing and his followers would’ve even given him the credit. Instead we get this dipshittery.

                            JL & Frank:

I am speaking to your feelings of Trump. I do not think you hate anyone.

But there is a consistent pattern of criticism without any balanced judgement. So yeah, That consistent beating does get frustrating and when I try to find the positive in things which is lacking severely. Sadly, this thread is not full of that nor is any political conversation which is why I usually stay clear of this. I am now reminded and plan to avoid it.. Don’t get me wrong. I get it.. I share the same feelings but I tend to believe we are not going over the ledge. We are in for a bad ride but I believe things will get adjusted as people become angry and disgruntle. The next election cycle will likely have this shift.

I think both parties are full of selfish, evil and immoral politicians. So this pendulum will continually shift every 4/8 years.

We have shifted from an Incompetent President who cozied up to China to a narcissist one who is now cozying up to Russia.

                            • A link provided on Cougarboard resulted in my first visit to Truth Social and it was fascinating. So many untruths next to the website's "Truth" logo is Orwellian Newspeak writ large (his lies about Canadian tariffs and his criticisms of the trade deal he once said was the best in world history are also bizarre). I'm sure that eventually Trump will say he wasn't serious about trying to make Canada our 51st (chances of which are best illustrated with the provervial snowball and propane torch), but for now he seems very focused on doing that.
