How is forgiving debt going to solve that problem?

Those schools have been emboldened and are the worst offenders. In another job, I’d work with people who went to Stevens Hennegars and got a nursing degree and were burdened with more students loans than I was from grad school. It’s predatory.

But to the larger topic, student loan debt hasn’t always been this problematic. Somethings have changed and I don’t think it’s that people are lazier. People and companies have access to bankruptcy relief, but student loans are sacrosanct.There needs to be changes and having a big default bomb waiting to go off isn’t helpful for the economy. The government is constantly cutting sweetheart deals with corporations and exempting them from taxes. The argument being that’s it is economically wise. I think it’d be ok to do this, if it is followed up by systemic changes.

Having an educated citizenry is good for the nation, and history demonstrates that.

But fear not that won’t happen. Devos is always moving the department of Ed in the other direction and is has a lot of financial interests tied in up in for-profit degree mills.

The government probably just needs to get out of the education loan business altogether. Schools are overcharging based on students having all that borrowed money to give them.

Student loan debt is a pretty complex problem that I don't think a blanket forgiveness program solves. But the primary burden should fall upon university administrators and faculty who have been feasting on financially illiterate students with access to ungodly amounts of credit. For instance, Elizabeth Warren was pulling down half-mil at Harvard Law.

There are some interim steps that could/should be taken prior to just wiping away billions in student debt. A couple things come to mind. Providing exemptions to discharging student loan debt in bankruptcy. Requiring student loan repayment statistics to be considered for universities in proposals for federal research funding. Requiring public universities to provide some level of performance guarantee on federal loans. Setting an eligibility ceiling on university F/A rates. There are a ton of things that can be done to staunch the bleeding, but it may be too complicated a discussion in the age of Trump and AOC.

As part of that solution the symptoms will need attention. I’m not married to the idea of just wiping out everyone’s debt willy nilly, but something needs to happen.

Tax cuts on the wealthy have consequences and another good reminded why changing the capital gains tax would not be helpful right now.

Words might be harsh but it’s not untrue. Those same folks watch Fox News non-stop and whine about socialism (not from a pragmatic standpoint but idealogical). Meanwhile they freak out if their programs get threatened leaving the problems squarely on the shoulders of the young and unborn.
