Why would the republicans whine about the EC? Trump will almost assuredly lose the popular vote again.

I feel that my vote for president doesn't really count. In the eight presidential elections that I voted in when I lived in California, the state was going with the Democrat and my vote wouldn't make any difference at all. Now that I'm in Idaho, the state will go with the Republican and my vote still won't count. With a pure democratic vote my vote would count.

By the way, I voted today - mayor and city council. I know that my vote counts in those races.
Interesting way to think about it. However, one could argue that a voters vote in Idaho counts even less in a popular vote scenario. What is one vote in an election where 136 million votes cast really worth?

True, I don't know. It sounded right when I was typing it.

It's worth exactly as much as one vote case anywhere else in the country. With the Electoral College it isn't.

That would also make it possible for people in Washington DC to have a vote count. Maybe even Puerto Rico.

You have it backwards. Your vote in Idaho would count less, not more.

Washington DC has 3 electoral votes. Why don't their votes count now?

You are going to have to explain why your vote doesn't count in a EC system, but somehow would count in a popular vote system. Just because your vote isn't a vote for the winning side in Idaho, doesn't mean that all of the sudden it become more valuable because you can cast it in a general election where there are 136 million people voting. Your vote has next to no value in such a system.

Put another way, Idaho has a population of around 1.8 million people and has 4 electoral votes, which equals 1 electoral vote per 450,000 people in Idaho. California has a population of around 40 million and has 55 electoral votes, which is 1 electoral vote per 727,272 people in California. You want to move it to a system where there is one electoral vote for every 350,000,000.

                • I’m okay with getting rid of the electoral college if we move to a parliamentary system. But a straight popular vote under the current system is a really stupid idea.

Anti-imperialism is the underlying fracture point of the US electorate... that is why Tulsi is popular with both some segments of the right and some segments of the left.

Gee golly, you think that nominating a Dem that has appeal to BOTH the left AND the right would be a slam dunk strategy. But the Left is too fixated on ideological purity to grasp this simple concept and therefore it seems unlikely the Dems will defeat Trump next year.

Exactly...get rid of the EC and California, Texas, and New York are the only 3 states that count for elections.

                            • The Democrats took control of the VA legislature for the 1st time in over 25 years, and it looks like Trump's ally in KY has lost reelection bid gov. Trump carries that state by like 30 points.
