The 2020 Presidential Election Primary Thread

I have to admit, I'm relatively torn on the election issues and who should be forced to change. In all honesty - I'd like to see both parties make a move towards being a little more sane.
During the last presidential election, I was an R who voted 3rd party instead of for Trump. Being in Utah, I knew it didn't matter and wouldn't make a difference. But I wanted the R's to get fewer votes and recognize that they can't put up a crap candidate and take GOP voters for granted.
I can see that there's an element of taking the proactive approach this time around of not only NOT voting for a Republican but actually voting FOR a Democrat that might be better at sending a message to the R's to get their house in order.
But do I really want to send the message to the Democrats that they can go even further left this election with some serious batshit crazy proposals and it will get them MORE votes than they got last time? Yeah - not going there. I honestly would be more than happy to vote for a moderate/reasonable Democrat over either Trump or a 3rd party candidate next November. But there's no way I'm voting for these crazies that the Dem's are putting forward.
And, quite frankly, I'm actually feeling more likely to vote for Trump as a result. Not because I like the guy - but because I really want the Dem's to get the message that if they, as Bill Maher stated, would "just be less crazy than Donald Trump", then they'd have a chance.
But they won't. They are fully embracing more crazy. And while I see Trump as a crazy one-off Republican candidate-turned-president, the Democrats sprint to the left seems to be being embraced by a number of candidates. Call me crazy, but I'm more worried about what we'll get from supporting the Dem's. I don't see Trump fundamentally changing the GOP permanently - but I guess we'll see if that is true. I do see the Dem candidates potentially fundamentally changing their party permanently - if they are successful at getting that platform elected.

Maher is going sane at the right time.Originally posted by Eddie View PostThat there is pretty funny. Most of the time Maher just bugs me - but I find myself agreeing with him more and more on certain issues. And this time he hit it out of the park.
"This should be easy. Just be less crazy than Donald Trump - are you guys seriously struggling with this?!?"
I've said all along - if Trump is re-elected, it will be on the Democratic party and the candidates they put forward more than on the voters. We all trust our own unorthodoxies.

Trump would absolutely trounce Warren. She and her people somehow think she can get under his skin. Two candidates with no self-awareness.Originally posted by Uncle Ted View PostIn the latest polls Warren is losing to Drumpf in every swing state:

That saying that goes "Never wrestle with a pig. You'll both get dirty and the pig likes it." That was written about Trump and his tweeting habits. No self-awareness for sure.

Exactly. The election will be won or lost in battleground states. I don't know why people even care about national polls anymore, except to confirm that the majority of Americans do not like Trump.Originally posted by wapiti View PostLandslide on the coasts and losing close in the middle. Perhaps because those who care are interested in pushing a narrative the concludes with the electoral college being replaced by a pure democratic vote?Originally posted by Northwestcoug View PostExactly. I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

Maybe, though I'm not sure if I believe there's a coordinated effort to push for a pure vote. More likely there's an abundance of pollsters who have to do something to show for their work.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostPerhaps because those who care are interested in pushing a narrative the concludes with the electoral college being replaced by a pure democratic vote?"...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. I don't think it is a coordinated effort. I think those who do these polls and those who look at them care very deeply about politics personally. I also tend to think they are in the camp who tend to be more liberal and right now their team is being hurt by the electoral college. I don't think they are opposed to the electoral college as much as I think they are in favor of arguments that are good for their team in the moment.Originally posted by Northwestcoug View PostMaybe, though I'm not sure if I believe there's a coordinated effort to push for a pure vote. I feel that my vote for president doesn't really count. In the eight presidential elections that I voted in when I lived in California, the state was going with the Democrat and my vote wouldn't make any difference at all. Now that I'm in Idaho, the state will go with the Republican and my vote still won't count. With a pure democratic vote my vote would count.
By the way, I voted today - mayor and city council. I know that my vote counts in those races.
