I don't know much about tribal cops, but I imagine they are a lot that have extensive patience for snotty white tourist types?

My confusion is about the focus of the protest. Is there something about Burning Man that they find objectionable re: the environment? Or are they just using Burning Man and the line of cars as a convenient means for getting their issue noticed? I can't imagine there is a lot to object about regarding people dressing up and partying in the northern Nevada desert.

I'm guessing it's the environmental mess? People being pretentious about people being pretentious.

The same reason they throw tomato paste on paintings in a museum. It creates a scene and gets them on the news....or goes viral.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I considered that as well, and that is still the top reason I have thought if, but I’d that were really their reasoning, there wouldn’t have to be an easier and more convenient location than Burning Man in the middle of the northern Nevada desert??

From what I hear, Burning man folks are very careful to clean up after themselves. When they leave you'd hardly know they were there. There might be some other environmental issues they'd be worried about, but leaving a mess after the party isn't one of them.

Winning hearts and minds by making everyone hate you and think you are a bunch of lunatics. Brilliant.

I don't know this Peter T. Coleman, but I agree his op-ed completely.

It may shock you, as it did me, to learn that in both 2022 and 2023, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression’s College Free Speech Rankings report, which surveys students’ perceptions of tolerance for free speech on college campuses across the United States, ranked Columbia dead last out of the 203 institutions evaluated. The report uses student responses to rank schools from best to worst on eight dimensions including openness, comfort engaging with controversial topics both in class and interpersonally, and acceptance of the use of disruptive conduct and coercive methods of protest to silence speakers. Yes—Columbia, an elite Ivy League school, was given a tolerance score of 9.91 out of 100. This poor performance earned the University a unique spot in the report’s worst category: “abysmal.”

I have been on faculty at Columbia for over 25 years studying and teaching about social psychology, and I lead courses examining relationships between constructive conflict resolution, social justice, and peace. One of the first concepts I teach my students is that open disagreement and conflict are vital. Just as fire is essential to healthy forest ecosystems, so too is conflict to thriving social-psychological systems. Too much or too little conflict can be problematic, certainly, but an optimal balance provides critical support in improving our cognitive development, learning, and relationships. On a broader scale, these individual changes engender increased innovation, resistance to injustice, and ensuing enactment of social justice reform. Therefore, a healthy amount of conflict is crucial to the establishment and survival of functioning democracies. Institutions of higher learning should endeavor to encourage open disagreement and to teach and model how to constructively channel civil dissent for the benefit of all.

Harvard will be the hardest to turn around, but at a certain point the prestige of the Ivies will take a significant hit. This is a great opportunity for other exclusive universities to bolster their reputations. I'm not exactly sure where I heard it, but someone said the transition from "prestigious/elite universities" to just "expensive universities" is well under way.

I think you heard it from a stupid person. This is what I don't get. You pose as a libertarian, but you have a problem with a university because it doesn't bow to political pressure. You should be applauding Harvard.

Libertarians arent allowed to criticize an increasingly illiberal institution?

What does libertarianism have to do with political pressure? This isn’t government creating laws that get in the way of things.

Libertarians are allowed to have opinions. Sure they will celebrate free speech, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be critical.
