CS Lewis probably didn't like Mormons either.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostCowboy is picking and choosing his Mark Twain as it suits his purposes
Maybe CS Lewis would have been a better appeal to authority next time!
Originally posted by CS Lewis in Letter to Woman in SLCI have always in my books been concerned simply to put forward "mere" Christianity, and am no guide on these (most regrettable) "interdenominational" questions. I do however strongly object to the tyrannic and unscriptural insolence of anything that calls itself a Church and makes teetotalism a condition of membership.

Where did I say I wanted to stop gay marriage? I have no such opinion or intention.Originally posted by Applejack View PostSo gay parents "outperform the general population as a parent", yet you want to stop gay marriage because heterosexual adoptive couples are better? Seems like a strange reason to be opposed to gay marriage.sigpic

He argued that children of adoptive hetero parents are happier than children of adoptive gay parents. Because that is the natural order of things, it would be a preference for children to have hetero parents so they can be happier.Originally posted by Applejack View PostSorry, I misread. But hetero adoptive parents! If you are with your birth parents, you won't be as happy as you would with gay ones.Originally posted by Topper View PostHe argued that children of adoptive hetero parents are happier than children of adoptive gay parents. It is not a very convincing argument or belief; however, I can understand at first blush why a Christian with an orthodox perspective might believe that. Again, I don't know what metrics exist for measuring "happiness", but the only measure where hetero parents might have a leg up is in terms of acceptability in all parts of our communities. We know they wouldn't be accepted in orthodox LDS communities.Originally posted by Applejack View PostBut hetero adoptive parents! Ken Jennings weighs in on the new policy. Go to about minute 28 of this podcast: http://www.savagelovecast.com/episodes/474#.VmB0VXarSUl"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

One of my favorite things about that talk is the fact that revelation was given to the prophet and he disseminated it to us by putting it into a handbook that is available to very few members, which change was caught by the Dehlinites, and was taken to the press who made a big stink about it, which caused church pr to interview an apostle to explain the policy, which didn't really clear up anything, which caused for a clarifying statement (but no real change to the confusing wording).Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post

I know you love John Dehlin, but please stop giving him credit for a significant role in this issue. There is no way on earth this thing was going to be kept under the radar, even for a few hours. Don't be ridiculous. You can't simultaneously enforce a policy and keep it secret.Originally posted by Moliere View PostOne of my favorite things about that talk is the fact that revelation was given to the prophet and he disseminated it to us by putting it into a handbook that is available to very few members, which change was caught by the Dehlinites, and was taken to the press who made a big stink about it, which caused church pr to interview an apostle to explain the policy, which didn't really clear up anything, which caused for a clarifying statement (but no real change to the confusing wording).

So when folks call us a bunch of gay bashers we can just say it is the "will of the Lord". When does the new section of the D&C come out? Or is this one of those revelations like the priesthood ban for Blacks?Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post

Sure, it would have blown up/generated a 'clarification' if Dehln never got involved. JD's a part of it, but there's a Progmo/Exmo internet world that is highly interested in every little development that happens related to the church. Anything noteworthy gets blown up immediately. In this case, JD jumped on it early, and got his name attached to it.Originally posted by Northwestcoug View PostSure, it would have blown up/generated a 'clarification' if Dehln never got involved.
