Is there a concise definition of a "racist"? I hope it isn't like pornography. Hard to define, but you "or others will for you" know it when they see it?

These sorts of things often take generations to overcome.

My grandmother used to call us to the dinner table by saying, "Last one to the table is a baby n*****!"

My parents weren't as overtly racist, although they did laugh at the occasional "Beaner" joke, but I do remember counsel from them growing up against interracial marriage - justifying it as being more difficult due to cultural differences.

My wife and I have been very conscious about trying to raise our children to not look down on anyone else because of their race or skin color.

Our kids have and have had friends of different races (my son's best friends over the years have been black, Asian, and Jewish), and the only time I've ever heard one of our kids say anything remotely racist was when my step-daughter make a negative comment about "black people." This was when my wife decided it was time to tell her that her birth father (who she's never met) is black. (My step-daughter has blonde hair and blue eyes, so it came as a bit of a surprise to her).

So, yeah, I think the stuff Bott said is a remnant of a racist history of the church and apparently that history is being wiped out much more slowly in some families than in others.

I had thought Flake was the senator behind the Arizona anti-illegal immigration bill a few years ago, but doing a little research, it seems he's actually pretty moderate toward the issue. That took away a really snarky comment from me. I hope he and his son have some really good discussions about these things and that he's able to help his son be a better person.

I wonder the same thing. My BIL (blond, blue-eyed fella) often gets texts from a co-worker and good friend (former NFL WR who is black) of jokes that are some of the most offensive racially charged jokes I've ever heard.

So...

Is former NFLer racist? Is it even possible for an AA to be racist against AAs? I'm thinking probably not.

Is my BIL racist for laughing at those jokes that were sent to him from the AA co-worker? Might this be where the racism begins, despite the fact that his co-worker is one of his best friends and the orginator of the jokes?

Sometimes BIL forwards these jokes to me. Maybe my BIL isn't racist for laughing at the jokes sent by AA friend/coworker, but maybe he's racist for forwarding them to me. Perhaps that is where the racism starts. What if I laugh at some of them? Does that make me racist? Is it possible that none of the three of us are racist, but that we just laugh at jokes we find funny?

Burning questions, indeed.

I suppose it depends on the joke and the context. Enjoying racist jokes is one of many potential indicators that you believe one race is superior to others.
