Pretty fascinating read about a small-town Texas DA and Sheriff who teamed up to withhold crucial evidence in order to send an innocent man to jail for the murder of his wife. I suppose it fits in this thread because they finally got it right (even if it took a NY attorney to prove they had initially gotten it wrong).

There's a video of that former prosecutor now state judge at that court of inquiry. He looks and talks like the stunt double for Buddy on Friday Night Lights. That guy is quite possibly going to be imprisoned. The thing that clinched it for me is that he didn't call the lead investigator as a witness for obvious reasons, namely he didn't want to provide the investigator's notes to the defense.Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”Comment

I can't fathom a sheriff and DA putting a guy away for life if they actually knew he was innocent. In these kinds of cases it's almost always the husband that kills the wife. I think they operated under that assumption, built on it and they got so far down the path they refused to believe anything else. They regarded the exculpatory stuff as inconvenient facts that would get in the way of a conviction. I think also there is the benefit of hindsight because of the DNA testing on the bandana.
I'll have to read the story again, but I can't recall why the bandana wasn't introduced in the first place. Didn't the defense actually know about that or was that discovered to be in possession of the sheriffs later? The BIL was the one that actually found the bandana and perhaps he mentioned it to Morton.
The issue regarding whether they would have caught Norwood and stopped the second killing is interesting. It's doubtful whether they would have found the green van he was seen with. But there was the issue with the credit card transaction with Christine Morton's card after her death. They didn't go into much detail, but that seems like the one lead that may have led to Norwood.Part of it is based on academic grounds.
