The two biggest reasons:

1. It wasn't that way when I came here 32+ years ago. State government was still bipartisan and the economy boomed, especially under Pete Wilson. It's amazing how quickly we changed to a one-party state where the anti-business and redistributionist party has a super-majority in the Legislature. Many people have roots so deep and ties so strong that moving out now is not an acceptable option.

2. We're also hooked on the drug that is living in California. There's wonderful stuff here almost everywhere you turn.

Still, I have a hard time encouraging young people who want a typical LDS family life to come to Coastal California for the long term. I didn't feel that way until about 10 years ago.

I don't mind visiting California, but relocating there makes no sense. Its business climate is so hostile, its tax environment so oppressive, you'd be insane not to look elsewhere. How many long term business types intend to retire there? I imagine many will sell out and go to less expensive environs. Just my guess.

California is the one state that makes New York look business friendly.

Some things I miss about Texas: Little kids call all adults sir and ma'am, people wave at everyone they drive past, awesome hospitality, badass thunder storms.

A lot of the reserves in Africa are handling their animal populations the same way these Texas ranchers are.

Phil Collins donates Alamo collection to Texas museum

The 63-year-old Genesis star said he had amassed more than 200 artefacts after becoming fascinated with the 1836 battle as a child.


Collins said he was donating the collection - thought to be the largest in private hands - to ensure it was better cared for in the future.


It includes items such as a rifle owned by folk hero Davy Crockett.


At an event announcing the donation in San Antonio, Collins joked he had spent "all the money I made from music" on his collection related to the battle where 1,500 Mexican troops laid siege to 200 Texans fighting for Texas independence.

What's right with Texas?

I am on my way home after spending a day and a half touring SWDs in the Eagle Ford. The only thing that was right about it was the license to print money that these guys have. Other than that it was pretty bleak place.

That said, it's nearly as bad (so far) as people had warned before we moved here. It's been consistently 90-95 every day with 40-60% humidity. It's hot, but so is Utah in the summer.

Summer is an ideal time to visit family to the north and to float tubes on the Guadalupe River and at Schlitterbahn (New Braunfels) while the kids are out of school.

Most pools/lakes are too warm but this place is spring fed so the water stays a brisk 70 degrees year round.
