What's right with Texas?

I have been in Texas for business. Texas is a weird place. On the cab ride to the airport this morning I learned the following: 1. Democrats (like the cab driver) will not vote for the democratic nominee for governor in TX because she is a woman and every good christian knows female DNA has no leadership in it because God created Eve AFTER Adam; 2. Once you are over 50 years old you shouldn’t worry about ‘intimate relations’ anymore because you don’t have much left to offer and it isn’t worth it; 3. Brazilians used to be the most beautiful people on earth but ever since they legalized same sex marriage they have become less attractive, which is what happened to Puerto Ricans, and become more ugly each day; 4. Ramada Inns are “raggedy ass hotels” (hard to argue with that one); 5, In general, people shouldn’t fly in airplanes as any accidents will be fatal whereas when driving you can usually survive, even if you are maimed for life. He was quite a guy. I gave him a decent tip because he was the most entertaining thing I experienced here.

There is so much wisdom in point 4 that I want to see something redeemable in the other 4.

I guess 1 out of 5 isn't bad. Cabbies should be held to the same standard as a pitcher hitting. The cabbie was probably awake 98 hours straight at that point you were having the conversation.

Longman admits Texas has "outperformed the rest of the country in its growth of high-paying jobs." That, he says, is "potentially a very big deal." So he spends the rest of the article trying to explain it all away. He argues, for example, that the growth is almost entirely due to the boom in oil and gas production, though that industry directly accounts for just 8% of the new jobs.

I have a theory and I think it applies here. If you have to use more than one paragraph to explain away a fact or hard evidence, then it's likely you are full of crap.

Texas is awesome and the governmental model works well down here. Anybody who says otherwise is just jealous.

Just yesterday I was talking about Texas and someone stated that Texas Legislators only meet for a certain period of time and are only paid a small amount of money (Guy said $6,000). I found this hard to believe so I thought I would look it up and see..

Yep. That is correct (The amount is off a little but they are paid very little. In fact, most of them have to have their own business etc to make a living. They can't live off of their compensation as a Texas Legislature..

This should be required in all states..

In addition to their annual salary all legislators and the lieutenant governor receive a per diem personal allowance of $128 for every day the legislature is in session (both regular and special session). This adds up to $17,920 for the regular 140-day session. Annual compensation for the year in which the legislature is in session totals $25,120 - which includes the $7,200 salary and $17,920 per diem allowance. For the biennial term, legislators earn $32,320, or a yearly average of $16,160.

It helps keep career politicians away....but it also allows for some real nutcases to run and win. The biggest benefit though is that our politicians are most likely to have another job and therefore have hands on experience in the private sector.....which is something Obama and many other national politicians lack.

I tend to disagree (At least on the federal level). How many of the Federal legislators are multi-millionaires. How many of them were millionaires prior to being a senator (I am look at you Harry "You Filthy Money Grabber" Reid)..
