That's not what he commented about. You don't have a constitutional right to lie.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

But it appears as if you really thought people had an ironclad right to lie protected by the first amendment, and now you're trying to change the topic.

          • JL should provide legal counsel to Rolling Stone Magazine about this novel idea of printing lies without repercussion. In that case, Rolling Stone didn't even produce the lies themselves, they just printed lies coming from a nutty catfishing girl.

What Trump really means is that it should be a crime for someone to ever say anything critical or negative about him. Everything he says has some element of trying to carve away at our Constitutional rights and civil liberties.

He gets it? "Yes it is [libel protected by the First Amendment]." I don't think so.

Let's say Jack is guilty of libel. Would there be legal grounds for Jack to be arrested and imprisoned?

Lol. Do you honestly think Trump's current campaign against the media is truly about what would qualify as llibel in a court of law? Don't be ridiculous. Yes, commando gets it.

Our country doesn't criminalize libel. However, the First Amendment is a defense to all kinds of civil lawsuits that involve speech, but not libel, if the elements can be proven, which isn't easy. Just because we don't criminalize it doesn't mean that it's protected by the First Amendment. There's a lot of case law that says libel is not protected by the First Amendment. See New York Times v. Sullivan.

No. But I was making a different point. Libel is not protected speech. It's just not.

See, this is exactly what Trump was talking about. Here you are, allowed to print WHATEVER YOU WANT, even if it is 100 false!!!

Trump's a turd. If the media was really lying, wouldn't he demand a retraction? Put his legal team on the case for an immediate slam-dunk libel case? Of course he would, but guess what-- they aren't lying. Therefore his only remedy is to continue to bitch and speculate about "opening up the libel laws" so that the media can't make him look terrible by printing the things he says the way they do. F%ing wannabe tyrant.
