Well - to be completely honest I don't think I ever actually heard the context of when Romney made the statement or what was being discussed at the time. But your comment here got me to look it up. Here's the first article I found (I have no idea of it comes from a political leaning that you approve or disapprove of - but it quotes the parties and provides context. And that's good enough for me.)

Apparently the discussion was regarding raising taxes on corporations versus raising taxes on people. So my initial reaction is you may have a point - unless you are teapartier, taxes isn't the same as stealing. Now here's the actual exchange as to what was said:

“Corporations are people, my friend,” Romney said.

Some people in the front of the audience shouted, “No, they’re not!”

“Of course they are,” Romney said. “Everything corporations earn ultimately goes to people. Where do you think it goes?”
So...upon further review I'm gonna say that this is the EXACT context that my friend was using. He was explaining that the product (and its monetary equivalent) stolen from his company is stolen from his children. Because when it is stolen it can't move from the business to them. Romney is saying that taxes taken from a corporation are taxes taken from people - or at least that when you tax a corporation you are reducing the amount of money that goes from the corporation to people.

So - did I miss something? Is there another interpretation? Because I'm actually coming away from this believing that this family believes in Romney's idea on the subject even more than I did when I originally posted.

What do you think he meant? CSPAN video footage at the link below:

Breaking news, political news, and investigative news reporting from Raw Story's team of journalists and prize-winning investigators.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney faced unfriendly fairgoers at the Iowa State Fair Thursday, telling them that he wouldn’t raise taxes on corporations to save Social Security because “corporations are people.”

“What are you going to do to strengthen Social Security and Medicare without cutting federal spending?” one fairgoer asked.

“I’m not going to raise taxes,” Romney insisted. “That’s my answer.”

“Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid account for about half of federal spending,” the candidate later said.

“That’s a lie!” a person in the audience shouted.

“We have to make sure the promises we make in Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare are promises we can keep. And there are various ways of doing that. One is we can raise taxes on people,” Romney explained.

      “Corporations!” someone yelled.

“Corporations are people, my friend,” Romney replied. “Of course they are. Everything corporations earn ultimately goes to people.”

Mitt authored an opinion in the WSJ on foreign policy. The most interesting thing about it is it's existence. One might wonder why he wrote it.

        Three theories:

One: he's taking the opportunity to not-so-subtly remind the world how they treated him for being the only candidate who understood the geopolitical landscape and redeem his name. Nothing more than a told-you-so.

Two: he's trying to fill the role of an elder statesman in a party without one. If he can't be king, he may be testing the reach of his influence to see if he can't at least be a kingmaker.

Three: 2016. Why not? (Yeah, I don't believe that either, but geez, if we have to put up with Santorum and Huckabee again, might as well.)

Jeb Bush and Romney are the only two credible guys from the right that could beat Hillary. I don't think Romney will run again but he was right on many issues that media laughed off.

I don't think it mattered whether he was right or not. Obama's most staunch supporters don't seem to care that the hallmark accomplishment of his presidency thus far has been, as Zack Galifianakis suggested, pardoning that turkey in 2013.

Romney is definitely not running for president again.

And I don't believe Hillary will be the nominee for the Democrats.

A brilliant man once said that the only people who could beat Hillary in 08 were McCain and Condy Rice, but that the GOP would never nominate McCain.

                  Oops.

Why not? Do you think somebody will run against her and beat her? If so, it would be one of the most remarkable upsets in American electoral history. And who could do that? Joe Biden? Cory Booker? Elizabeth Warren? I'd say its a safe bet that the bid is Hillary's if she wants it.

Maybe you think she doesn't want it, or, perhaps more likely, that she doesn't want it enough to run again. The problem with that is that Hillary's shadow looms large over the rest of the party. Candidates and donors alike are operating under the assumption that she is their man. As much as other would-be nominees, Biden in particular, are jockeying for the spot of "I will if she doesn't," there is no question that Hillary's presumed run has chilled other putative candidacies. The Democratic Party will be in a world of hurt if she doesn't run, and the hurt is incrementally more painful the longer she waits to bow out. At some point, she has to run out of duty to the party. I think we are either approaching or past that point.

So I fully expect Hillary to run and win the nomination. I won't hold my breath for Mitt to give us the 2008 matchup we should have had.

Mitt comes out in support of raising the minimum wage.

                      Huh.

Kinda clever, actually. He doesn't have a vote that matters and conservatives are bitter about him anyway, so no real harm done. On the other hand, the last republican nominee supports raising the minimum wage, so how can you say that republicans categorically reject it? Fall on the sword and make the democrats' sharpest sword just a little more dull.

Do you want Mitt Romney to run for President in 2016? Let your voice be heard today by signing the official Draft Mitt Petition.

Looks like there is some hope for a third run!

"He's been pretty adamant he's not going to run again," said Nielsen, a vice president of an online marketing company who worked on Romney's 2012 campaign. "I don't know if there's anything appealing about this to him right now."What could change Romney's mind, Nielsen said, is a strong show of support from voters who realize they should have paid more attention to Romney's pronouncements on Russia and other issues.
"He was right about a lot of things," Nielsen said.
While there's a petition online at draftmitt.org, Nielsen said the group is just starting to look at what it's going to take to convince Romney he's still the right man for the job.
"Probably sometime in early July, maybe late June, we'll have a better idea," Nielson said. "Right now, it's just some phone calls and some emails. There's just not much to say yet."

That's a waste of a lot of money that's not even Mitt's. He doesn't care anymore.

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I agree. He would get blasted if he ran again. Religion would be a much bigger problem for him this time, IMO.
