This assumes that the Republican constituency achieved maximum voter turnout in 2012. There is early evidence that contradicts that assumption.

That said, the GOP can't ignore the growing hispanic population. But, just adopting faux-liberal policies towards minorities is a silly strategy for broadening the base.

I love that he suggests that people who voted for Obama are in need of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

Mormons can be so cuckoo about politics.

That's a good point The_Douger. We all need the Atonement of Jesus Christ, regardless of politics.

But some are taking more than their fair share without making any kind of an effort. You should only get out of the atonement what you put into it.

I can't believe anyone compares a "religious" concept with a "political" one. I have even heard those who claim Jesus would be for redistribution of wealth.

Really, I think the parable of the "talents" is quite clear.

Religions are theocracies. They can either function better or worse because the leaders have control over the people. The people have no say. History is replete with good and blad leaders in religious movements. Not so sure a theocracy is a better system unless Jesus himself was running it, not his surrogates.

It's a she, but that's beside the point.

There is one other person that is having a similar meltdown, although not in just one post. They aren't my FB friend but their stuff is public and it's "liked" by a lot of my FB friends. I won't post the link here but suffice it to say that he's scaring me a little bit.

                    • I just wanted to confess my meltdown. I had one. Yes, indeed I did. And nikuman wouldn't send me his rum to help. And I'm still pretty sad, much moreso than any other election I can remember.

                      That's all.

                      • Dow down again today.

                        Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I don't have the proper licenses to send alcohol interstate.

As to the meltdown, for those of us Mormons who voted for Mitt I think there was an element of tribalism that made the loss hurt just that much more. Whether or not we admit it, a lot of us viewed the election as a referendum on our faith as well as a referendum on our politics, and to see Mitt go down was hard in that respect. I don't want to say it's the same as the passion I've seen in the African American community for Obama, but it's at least a kissing cousin.

But this is where I think we have every right to be happy. The race was definitely not about religion. Sure, a few people on the fringes were wacky but neither side seemed to care that much. Mitt the Mormon got damn close to being elected. Mitt the Moderate Mormon from Massachusetts probably would have been elected. Did he make mistakes? No. Did he embarrass me? Hell no. He accorded himself as a gentleman and we are better off in that way.

If there's anything to take home from this election, it's that representatives of two minority groups with a background of literal and legal disenfranchisement went toe to toe in an election in which race and religion - the reasons for disenfranchisement - played little to no role. I don't mean to insinuate that the plight of slaves and early Mormons is the same or equivalent, because that would be silly. But I do think it innovates growth as a nation and it makes me love my fellow man that much more.

Maybe the US will die a horrible financial death over the next four years or maybe it will be awesome for the next four thousand. I am not a prophet. But I am still very proud to live here and proud of what I saw on Tuesday. Even though my guy lost.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

                            Great post.

I took it harder than I thought I would. My wife was pretty upset about it. And it's not like we hate Obama, we just really wanted to see Mitt pull it off. My wife isn't a political person at all, but she was quite busy with checking polls, reading articles, and talking politics, which isn't anything I've seen her do in the entire time I've been married to her.

It meant more to her because an LDS person was involved, and because we felt like he so closely aligned politically with how we did.

I think as LDS people we can stand tall after how he handled himself. This country is still a great place to be and live.

You don't think women are as capable of being sanctimonious and aggressive as men?

                                You are a sexist jerk.
