That video is fascinating. I think - compared against what I've heard about that debate - Nixon actually handles some difficult questions pretty well.

If you're just listening, then yes, Nixon does just fine, and probably has the better of the debate. But then, there's that way that he shuffles at the podium (apparently, he had recently injured his knee). There's the sweat. There's the suit, blending as it does into the black-and-white background. There's the five-o-clock shadow. And, of course, let's not forget the fact that he looks like a potato chip.

I recall seeing some studies that show that the majority of people who heard the debate on the radio thought Nixon won, while those who watched on TV thought Kennedy won. Politicos were so spooked by what happened that there were no televised presidential debates again until 1976, between Carter and Ford. We've gotten over that reluctance now, of course....

        • Mormon voters wary of too much public support for Romney

“We love Mitt,” said Wilma LeSueur, 85, a Mormon whose family has lived in Arizona for generations. But with regards to Reid, she said jokingly, “I’m not sure how they let him keep his membership card.”
LOL. That popping sound you're hearing, that's people's heads exploding.
          Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

          • At some point, as a Mitt supporter, I just have to shake my head in amusement/amazement at his seeming inability to filter out the things you don't say when you're trying to generate some populist appeal -

There is nothing wrong with you owning four Cadillacs - but it doesn't help you to tell everyone that and it probably hurts you a little. Your filter should apply to both the "Cadillac" and to the number "four" - and you could then have a sentence that says "my wife drives an American car, I drive an American car - we are proud to support the American automobile industry."

There is nothing wrong with you having rich-ass friends who own NASCAR teams. But when you're out at the NASCAR track trying to create the impression that you can hang with the schmoes that frequent those places do not say "I have friends who own NASCAR teams." An appropriate sentence would be "I have some very close friends who are passionate about NASCAR and I've learned a lot about it through them." It does not need to come up and should not come up that they OWN the damn teams.

Love ya Mitt - almost more because of this penchant than I would otherwise because I think it suggests something that is almost like innocence. But innocence can be someone's undoing in this big bad world. Get it under control dude.

I will bet you $10,000 that Mitt finds a way to fix this problem in time for the general election.

                • I'm sick of hearing Mormon mockery compared to Jewish or Muslim mockery. Yes, not all religions are treated equal.

In my opinion the Catholics get teased much worse than Mormons. Whether it is benign jokes that involve nuns, priest, or the pope, all the way up to child molestation. The Catholic church gets it all. With all that, you don't hear Catholics complain about being picked on. Certainly not to the extent that you hear it when Mormons are picked on.

                  • Btw, the comment I made about Mormonism during Wed.’s debate was inappropriate, and I regret it. I’m willing to admit that with no caveats
Shouldn't this end the discussion on this? Dude ate crow. That should be good enough for everyone.

We Mormons do need to thicken our skin a bit though; I mean, our scriptures do call all other denominations an abomination, for Pete's sake. .

He is just a businessman deal maker at heart and has it engrained in his DNA that the more successful you are, the more people want to have you in charge.

I quite frankly don't understand it myself. We need the economy to get better. Let's see, I have a successful businessman and a very religious lawyer ex Senator to pick from. Seems like a duh to me.

But the linked article was not written by a Mormon. Furthermore, the article also mentions the biases against Catholicism.

If so, Mitt can refer to it in future speeches as "that state up North"
