Even back then politicians can't state the truth and get away with it.

Things like, we will restart the campaign. Yes, I have changed my mind on that. Or, I only have a law degree from Harvard and I haven't had a real job my whole life.

It was certainly unfortunate, and probably undeserved, but the reaction to his comment was swift and very negative. It gave quipsters a lot of ammunition (I remember something like "In his case, only a light rinse was needed"). Because others on the same Vietnam tour (there were multiple governors and others) said they didn't perceive any brainwashing, Romney was depicted as weak and susceptible to pressure, not something one wants in a President. Foreign policy was already his weak suit (esp. compared with Nixon), and his comment underscored that weakness.

As the Vietnam War dragged on, and as things like the Pentagon Papers and other examples of improper governmental action came out, Romney's comment looked less foolish, but the damage was done.

Reminds me of how Edmund Muskie was ruined for crying when somebody called his wife a slut. No wonder politicians are so stupid.

        • Lawrence O'Donnell went off on Mormonism again last night when talking about Romney. I really don't like this guy.

Now part of Romney's religion problem is that he's a part of a new religion. Established religions like Judaism, which is about 4,000 years old, and Christianity, which is about 2,000 years old, don't easily warm up to new religions like Romney's, which is only 182 years old. Mormonism was created by a guy in upstate New York in 1830 when he got caught having sex with the maid and explained to his wife that God told him to do it. Forty-eight wives later, Joseph Smith's lifestyle was completely sanctified in the religion he invented to go with it. Which Mitt Romney says he believes.
The Church was established April 6, 1830. I thought the stuff with Fanny Alger started in 1832. So regardless of what he thinks about Joseph's relationship with Fanny was, this is obviously false.

What a jackass and I formed that opinion prior to hearing him talk about mormonism Reading the first couple of sentence's I thought, this isn't bad. Then the gutter talk about Joseph Smith add on. Reminds me of some of SU's posts.

And these comments were actually quite tame compared to some of the stuff he's said in the past.

              • 48 wives is also a higher figure than I've seen before.

If you're going to attack, at least get the details right.

No need to exaggerate. The real number should be bad enough.

Do you like Klein. I have him just a notch above Paul Krugman. Krugman is actually on my shit list and Klein is just a candidate for the list.
