I think what they're really saying is that they don't think he's a true social conservative, which he probably isn't. If Romney had always been as socially conservative as most active Mormons in the US, he'd face far fewer questions about his conservatism.
If you're looking for a social conservative crusader - Santorum's the guy. Personally, social conservatism is much less important to me than fiscal conservatism. I think Romney can make a better case for fiscal conservatism than either Gingrich or Santorum.

I can't believe intrade still has Romney at over 70% to win the Republican nomination. Right now, it looks like Santorum is going to beat him in Michigan -- and I think that would lead to serious problems for Romney a week later on Super Tuesday.
The tide is going to have to turn against Santorum within a week, or I think Romney isn't going to win the nomination. If he doesn't perform well on March 6, I just don't see how he gets enough delegates in the end.Part of it is based on academic grounds.
