Another shooting near the CHOP Zone leaves man wounded

Gunfire has erupted once again in Capitol Hill near the CHOP area leaving one person wounded, Seattle Police said.

Officers noted a report of a shooting at 11th Avenue and East Denny Way, which is at the north end of Cal Anderson Park, just before 5 a.m. Tuesday.

A Seattle Fire Department medic brought the victim to Harborview Medical Center where he was treated for a wound to his calf, according to hospital spokesperson Susan Gregg and Seattle police. Seattle Fire officials described the victim as a man around 30 years old.

SPD says the victim "refused to provide any information about the circumstances surrounding the shooting or a suspect description to officers."

Wait... someone help me out. Is 5 a.m. between the hours of 8 p.m. and 8 a.m.? Cuz all the pictures of CHOP that my uber-woke neighbors post on my Facebook feed are taken in broad daylight. Asking for a friend.

      • This California city defunded its police force. Killings by officers soared.

Twelve years ago, officials in Vallejo, Calif., reluctantly took a step that activists are now urging in cities across the country: They defunded their police department.

Unable to pay its bills after the 2008 financial crisis, Vallejo filed for bankruptcy and cut its police force nearly in half — to fewer than 80 officers, from a pre-recession high of more than 150. At the time, the working-class city of 122,000 north of San Francisco struggled with high rates of violent crime and simmering mistrust of its police department. It didn’t seem like things could get much worse.

And then they did. Far from ushering in a new era of harmony between police and the people they are sworn to protect, the budget cuts worsened tensions between the department and the community and were followed by a dramatic surge in officers’ use of deadly force. Since 2009 the police have killed 20 people, an extraordinarily high number for such a small city. In 2012 alone, officers fatally shot six suspects. Nearly a third of the city’s homicides that year were committed by law enforcement.

            • State Senator assaulted by violent mob in Madison
              [...]
Demonstrators set a fire outside Madison PD's downtown substation and smashed windows. Chains were used to pull down the Forward statue and a statue of abolitionist colonel Col. Hans Christian Heg. The statue was thrown into Lake Monona.

State Senator Tim Carpenter (D-Milwaukee) was assaulted on the grounds of the state capitol. Carpenter, who was returning to his office at night, said he was beaten in the head, neck and ribs after being surrounded by 8 to 10 demonstrators. Carpenter tweeted, "Punched/kicked in the head, neck, ribs. Maybe concussion, socked in left eye is little blurry, sore neck & ribs." Carpenter was attempting to film some of the demonstrators. His video ends with two people running towards him before he was knocked to the ground, and Carpenter saying "leave my phone alone" before being assaulted.

Governor Tony Evers issued a statement saying "what happened in Madison last night presented a stark contrast from the peaceful protests we have seen across our state in recent weeks, including significant damage to state property. I want to be clear: violence against any person—whether in the middle of the street in broad daylight, at home trying to sleep, going for a run, or happening upon a protest as was the case last night—is wrong. It should never be tolerated."

The Governor also said he is considering calling out the Wisconsin National Guard to protect state property in Madison.

State Senator Robin Vos tweeted "this is absolutely despicable... I am saddened at the cowardice of Madison officials to deal with these thugs.”

This reminded me of a quote from the Greatest Movie Ever Made:

Fletcher: Damn you, Senator. You promised me those men would be decently treated.

                    • As my woke citizen of Vallejo daughter told me today, the story has been updated:

Clarification: An earlier version of this story did not adequately explain that when the city of Vallejo reduced police funding it did not provide additional funding to social services agencies, as many current “defund the police” proposals advocate. The story has been revised to add that information.
So yeah, Vallejo went bankrupt, let go half of its police officers, and didn't fund programs that could have helped deter that rise in crime. That's not a very hard connection to make.

She attended the virtual city council's meeting where the new budget was presented. The chief of police got up and defended it's request for 2.4 million in additional spending. He said it would help fund a burglary unit, additional clerical staff to help field calls, and more police presence in the worst parts of Vallejo. Later during the presentation some details came out about the increased funding request; it would help fund pay raises and budget increases that the city was contractually obligated to pay. Someone on the council then asked, 'how much of the 2.4 million is going to pay for the contractual obligations?' 'All of it', was the response. So just kidding about all those plans to make Vallejo safer! It was just a pretty cynical ploy to get the council to approve the budget. The vote, well past midnight, failed 4-3. They are revisiting it in 2 weeks.

Vallejo is a bad example to argue against defunding police. They have historically been corrupt. They need a complete fresh start, and the political will to use whatever money is taken from the police department to fund social programs.

Also, shout out to my civic-minded daughter. She even submitted in writing her objections to the city budget. She is more to the left on police issues than me, but she has done her homework and is serious about her convictions.

‘We are just gonna go out and start slaughtering them’: Three cops fired after racist talk of killing black residents

Sitting in his patrol car in Wilmington, N.C., earlier this month, Officer Michael “Kevin” Piner predicted that Black Lives Matter protests would soon lead to civil war. “I’m ready,” Piner told another officer, adding that he planned to buy assault rifles.

“We are just going to go out and start slaughtering them f------ n------,” he said.
