Get pulled over going 85 in a 65 zone down Spanish Fork Canyon.

Cop is very polite, takes my license, looks at my last name, asks if I'm related to my father.

He says "you really need to slow down, there are a lot of fatal accidents in this canyon."

"Yes definitely. Thanks very much for the reminder and sorry you had to stop me."

"Have a great evening. Drive safe."

No ticket, not even a formal warning.

I mean there is no doubt that a typical police interaction varies tremendously based on urban/rural and black/white status, also by socioeconomic class and education.
No doubt. Huge variety of factors. I got picked up once just after the point of the mountain. I was speeding and so was the guy in front of me. I asked why he didn't get him and he said the guy had Arizona plates and there would be a better chance of me paying the fine than a guy from Arizona.

I do wish though all these very high priced celebrities and athletes who are so critical of the police would put on the uniform and go out with them for two weeks. After that experience they may cut them some slack.

I don't know how many of you have read the facebook post of the Black officer who was killed. Read it. The part that got me was his telling of feeling anger toward him when in uniform and fear of him when out. I had tears in my eyes reading it.

I don't have an answer, I sure wish someone did.

    • The work of law enforcement coarsens the people who do it--even those who do it for the best of reasons. Maybe cops should periodically rotate to community development work or something.
We all trust our own unorthodoxies.

Not mine. I've been pulled over 10-15 times in my life and received a ticket each time, some for silly crap like seat belts, rear lights out and rolling through a stop sign. But in Japan, total respect. In France, screw you, ticket for you.
        Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Partially true. While I have clearly seen police pulling over crappy cars to be the general MO, the crime of 'driving while brown' is also a real thing in AZ. Black for that matter, too. A couple of years ago we shared a building with another firm where a friend of mine, who is a fairly attractive black female attorney, worked. She said she is routinely pulled over for no reason in her new-ish Honda Accord.

            • Who honestly on here can say they are walking down an alley and the other direction comes a guy with his pants half way down his butt, tatoo's, a few chains around his neck and long hair, isn't a bit more nervous than if the guy coming toward you in the ally is wearing a nice business suit?

Good point. I have heard more good lookin women complain about being pulled over than sweet spirit women.

I could ask, rhetorically, if that makes it any better, but I'm not going to patronize you.

Or did you just pay more attention to the good lookin' ones while they complained?

I think the guy in the nice business suit is definitely more nervous. Unless it's Joe Pesci or something.

Don't think so. There are plenty of opportunities for cops to ogle attractive women in this neck of the woods, and Terry stops would be among the least effective means.

I don't doubt what you are saying because you are honorable and wouldn't make something up. After watching cable news for a month, this is actually the first I heard cops are out harassing young black women too.

This is the first you are hearing of cops pulling black folks over for no reason in order to run a background check? I know it sounds outrageous but please know I would never make this thing up that has been happening on a general basis since the slaves were freed.

The cops are harassing a lot of people. The stakes just seem to be higher for some demo groups.

I have been harassed a lot. And yes it was in my younger days due to my social class, crappiness of car, and appearance. Now that I wear a tie to work, that crap has come to a stop. Thank goodness I'm white! :rockon2:

Wow, please read the post and don't put it in your own words. That is a JL trick. First I said I don't doubt you. I never said I haven't heard of cops pulling over black folks for no reason. I said black women and that may be happening to a large degree too, but I have only heard mainly about black males.
