Aside from the tragedy, another issue that will linger is the decision to place a bomb on a robot to kill one the snipers. I mean, holy shit!

I'd like to hear more about this bomb. What was the explosive charge used? My guess is it was a small enough charge intended to incapacitate him so that he could be safely taken into custody. But bomb is such a generic classification that people will naturally share your reaction.

If they intended to kill the suspect, I'd say they acted outside of the scope of their authority.

Maybe, unless hey guy started shooting again or unless they reaosnabley thought he would and there was no way to protect themselves or the public. But if they just rolled up and killed him, then that will be a problem.

You obviously don't understand the point I made, so let me try to make it a little more plain. When police officers employ the use of deadly force, it is not with the intent to kill. That would make them executioners. It is with the intent to stop whatever actions as the situation requires. Once they are able to subdue or stop the suspect, they are no longer authorized to continue to employ that deadly force.

So in this situation, they need to be able to articulate how much explosive they used to subdue to suspect. If they used a charge that they could reasonably expect the suspect to have been killed, they just became a judge, jury, and executioner.

That's what I thought happened the first time I read about it too. However, later multiple news sources said that the police sent in a bomb on the robot.

I read that from the Dallas Herald this morning, but that story was modified and taken down. But, everything I just looked at said that the police sent the robot in with a bomb to take out the shooter. So I deleted the post.

They had him pinned down but he certainly wasn't stopped. The robot was a fantastic idea and probably prevented more loss of life.

Agreed. We use these same techniques in the military when necessary. My interest in the bomb is mostly of an academic nature, and obviously a little too technical in scope for the layman.
