Honestly I think you can understand why the cop perceived it as threatening the way the guy quickly reached for something on the seat of his car. Making a quick motion like that is dumb -- of course the guy probably just was nervous and wanted to comply quickly.

But yeah obviously the cop screwed up big time and deserves to lose his job at a minimum and probably be convicted of a crime. Horrible communication and an unjustified shooting. Police have a tough job -- I would have been nervous too when he reached quickly into his car.

And making the rounds on Facebook is a story that a veteran died due to being beaten by VA police after trying to leave back in 2011. This is what the widow is alleging in a lawsuit, so I'm really hoping this ends up being untrue.

He's wearing a vest and carrying a pistol with 15 rounds in it, shooting a dude over a seatbelt violation. He might not be guilty of a crime, but he should never be authorized to police ever again.

He won't be. The guy was fired almost immediately and is being prosecuted.

The trooper's excuse was that the victim was 'behaving aggressively'. He's now facing 20 years in jail if he's found guilty.

How much do you want to bet that if there was no dashboard cam, the trooper could have convinced his department that his shooting was justified?

It seems like the way a cop might handle a traffic stop if he was really nervous/paranoid and had no training at all -- kind of like how a civilian lay person might handle it.

I'm pretty sure if most cops got a bad feeling about somebody they would pull their weapon and get behind their own car, shout some clear instructions. The way this dude just starts firing haphazardly is pretty damn incompetent and reckless. Jail time makes sense especially since it seems he lied about what happened.

I just watched the video. How anyone would not consider manslaughter is beyond me. He pulled up to a guy (who wasn't doing anything wrong), gave him directions, which he followed exactly as they were given. Then he was shot- not tasered, no pepper-sprayed, no bean-bagged, but shot multiple times without doing anything that even resembled putting the officer in harms way. He recklessly used a weapon, by not using good judgement. If a the young man had been drunk -another dangerous situation, where poor judgement is shown- and run over the cop, would there be any one defending his actions?
