The GOP legislators are going to be vindictive as hell this next session. Look for them to introduce bills that attack or weaken judiciary and education.Originally posted by MartyFunkhouser View PostUtah legislature gets slapped down again for not following the Utah constitution. I can't remember if it was in this thread or the Spencer Cox thread, but we had a discussion about Utah's push to ban social media usage for children. Australia just outlawed social media use for anyone under 16 years old.

Australia has imposed a sweeping ban on social media for children under 16, one of the world’s most comprehensive measures aimed at safeguarding young people from potential hazards online. But many details were still unclear, such as how it will be enforced and what platforms will be covered.
After sailing through Parliament’s lower house on Wednesday, the bill passed the Senate on Thursday with bipartisan support. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said that it puts Australia at the vanguard of efforts to protect the mental health and well-being of children from detrimental effects of social media, such as online hate or bullying."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? What is going on with the Utah Legislature this year? They have 10 constitutional amendments they're working on. Now they're talking about expanding the Utah Supreme Court. Sounds to me like they want to pack the court with judges sympathetic to their agenda.

I personally think that the Court is the right size, but the Appeals Court needs to be expanded, allowing the Supremes to become more of a Cert. type of court of last resort.
I am very much in favor of a recently introduced bill HB 451, which requires 67% in order to retain a judge. When there is not an alternative, it is almost impossible to get a bad judge out of office, and Utah has its share. Recently (actually not that recent, 2016) a judge was given a non-retain recommendation by the judicial council (7-2), which some attorneys view as a rubber stamp organization. She was far over her head, only having had very limited experience in a narrown section of the AG's office. She still won 57% of the vote to be retained, enabling her to get to a point in which she retired as soon as she was eligible, likely so she wouldn't have to face a 2nd retention election.“Every player dreams of being a Yankee, and if they don’t it’s because they never got the chance.” Aroldis Chapman

Yeah, unshocking they'd do this. This state's conservative GOP is underrepresentedOriginally posted by Bo Diddley View PostWhat is going on with the Utah Legislature this year? I hope not. I hope they have an underwhelming majority and are able to use that majority to consolidate their power, and then hopefully before too long they'll have to moderate.Originally posted by frank ryan View Post
