Canada is doubling down on nuclear. I live within thirty minutes of two massive nuclear power plants and a third even larger one is four hours away. I can't drive down the street without hearing a government ad on the radio talking about how Canada is investing in microreactors:

Canada wants to build up to 10 new nuclear plants.

Canada's ambitious new nuclear strategy has called for private investment to help expand the industry. Given that nuclear power plants are notoriously expensive to build, the government will have to heavily de-risk the ventures to attract large investors, like pension funds.

MAID program is doing well in Canada. “ Family sounds alarm after 83-year-old grandma dies under Canada's assisted-death program.”

According to the BBC, Canada’s MAID law, which legalized euthanasia in 2016, is responsible for one in every 20 deaths in Canada.
Brigitte Stegemann's granddaughter alleges the 83-year-old became distraught and said she "made a mistake" days before her MAiD procedure in Ontario.

            Some context to those stats:

The highest cause of death among Canadians is Cancer. This is largely because Canadians have a longer average life expectancy than Americans and as a result develop age-related cancers.

There are many states in the US (13) that have legalized assisted dying laws. Oregon’s assisted dying laws pre-date Canada’s by decades. I do not support MAID. I imagine more details about the story in your link will come to light, beyond what is being the sensational shared by Fox news or other outlets. The situation is under investigation by police.

              Interesting.

I looked it up. Age related cancer deaths per 100,000 people: Canada - 174, USA - 164.

I was curious and there are studies about why Canadians live longer than Americans on average:

The objective of the paper is to compare population health in the United States (US) and Canada. Although the two countries are very similar in many ways, there are potentially important differences in the levels of social and economic inequality ...

                From the Abstract:

"The objective of the paper is to compare population health in the United States (US) and Canada. Although the two countries are very similar in many ways, there are potentially important differences in the levels of social and economic inequality and the organization and financing of and access to health care in the two countries ...

... The population of Canada appears to be substantially healthier than the US population with respect to life expectancy, HRQL, and HALE. Factors that account for the difference may include access to health care over the full life span (universal health insurance) and lower levels of social and economic inequality, especially among the elderly."

Maybe the US needs to annex Canada!

It should be noted that DF has a proprietary interest in Health Utilities Incorporated (HUInc.), Dundas, Ontario, Canada. HUInc. distributes copyrighted Health Utilities Index (HUI) materials and provides methodological advice on the use of HUI. It should be noted that HUInc. received no payment for the use of HUI in the survey discussed in this manuscript. None of the other authors declare any competing interests.

                        Yeah, that study sounds fishy.

Lots of research showing that the US has lower life expectancy compared other developed/wealthy countries (including Canada) in large part due to 3 things:

                        1) high obesity - US diet is terrible. Too much junk, sugar, etc.

                        2) more automobile use - in Europe you are much more likely to use public transportation which is safer. US is so large that few places have the density to support european or japanese style public transportation infrastructure. More cars = more accidents

                        3) drug use - US has had an extreme epidemic of drug deaths. fentanyl, oxycontin, etc.

                        4) guns - homicides and suicides via firearms are high

The U.S. has excess mortality at young and middle ages, including deaths from drugs, firearms, motor vehicles, cardiovascular disease and metabolic disease. Those premature deaths pull American life expectancy downward substantially. Canada has fewer of many of those deaths. Drug overdoses disproportionately kill people in their 20s–50s. A death at 35 has an enormous effect on national life expectancy compared with a cancer death at 82.

Not really an income inequality thing either. Even relatively advantaged Americans often have worse outcomes than comparable people in other wealthy countries.

I know Canadians love to pretend that the life expectancy gap is due to their socialized medicine but that simply isn't the case.

So Americans eat terrible food, are unhappy to the point that they take drugs to cope with their terrible lives or terrible healthcare, commit suicide because of terrible mental health care, and their government doesn't care enough about them to invest in projects that will make them safer in the areas where population density and the number of motor vehicle collisions actively drag down the national life expectancy.

I don't know, Jeff. Seems like Canada and Europe have a few things figured out.
