I find debates boring and tedious and they generally never sway people’s opinions. But they are apart of our presidential election history. I’d also be concerned with the reasons Biden isn’t willing to debate.Originally posted by fusnik View Post
lol.
And you guys keep saying you won’t vote for Trump. Biden not doing a debate will push you to a no vote for POTUS? Really?
What can we learn from a debate with Trump and Biden that we already don’t know?
It’ll be 2 hours of Trump bloviating, a couple moments of Biden stumbling on his words, followed by hours of criticisms of the media for their lack of control and at the end we will all be stupider for entertaining such a spectacle.
Id never vote for Trump and my vote doesn’t count anyway since I’m in Texas…so none of this really matters."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

It's almost as though neither man deserves our vote. Hmm.

We’ve never had a rematch between an incumbent and former president.Originally posted by Moliere View Post

We’ve never had a debate between a dude who is still campaigning that an election was stolen from him and the opponent who allegedly stole said election.
This isn’t a policy election, it’s not an ideas election, it’s safeguarding democracy from a lunatic and his followers election.

Agreed. Biden should run to that side-by-side comparison.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostTrump is such a complete lunatic and threat to democracy that Biden would be crazy not to debate him. Dementia notwithstanding.Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I mean, they do have a few things in common. Two arms. Two legs. Two hands. No business being considered for the office of President.Originally posted by fusnik View Post

While the same principles seem to apply to releasing tax returns, you weren't concerned with Trump not releasing those.Originally posted by Moliere View Post

Trump would LOVE to debate Biden and everyone knows why. He doesn't debate, he flings insults and generates sound bites. That's all he does these days.Originally posted by Moliere View Post
Yes he will. It’s a perfect time for him to continue to push the narrative that Biden is cognitively in decline. One mistake from Biden and it could be a disaster. It’s a lot of upside for Trump and very little downside.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I've mentioned before how I enjoy watching occasionally a few minutes of the Kennedy-Nixon debates on YouTube, both for nostalgic reasons (I remember watching them with my parents when i was 8) and to see the overwhelmingly depressing difference between political dialogue then and now. I imagine interposing Trump into their debate (despite the sweat, Nixon did very well and Kennedy was Kennedy), watching how they would react to one of Trump's junior high school-type personal attacks and 10-year-old vocabulary. One can practically see the "WTF?" thought bubble over their heads. I think any adult during the 60s would be appalled by Trump's behavior, but perhaps I'm giving them too much credit.Originally posted by falafel View Post

This is a big part of the Democrats problem. Half the country doesn't think this is about safeguarding democracy. It should be an ideas and a policy election. But Biden's policies aren't popular and he is an inconsistent pandering mess. So all in on safeguarding democracy while gaslighting us on all the rest.Originally posted by fusnik View PostThis isn’t a policy election, it’s not an ideas election, it’s safeguarding democracy from a lunatic and his followers election.

I recently watched part of that debate too - for the first time. I remember hearing how the debate was seminal due to it being the first televised debate and Nixon looked bad on tv. But, like you, I thought Nixon did very well in the parts I watched and I would give Trump's arm and leg to return to that kind of political discourse.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View Post

You post stuff like this and your previous post about Biden being held in a cocoon and it’s obvious you support Trump.Originally posted by USUC View Post

Not even a mention of the new tariffs Trumps wants, his constant railing on the stolen election, and him holing up at Mar-A-Lago.
Who is gaslighting who?

Debates need to be retired in the current sense. Allowing candidates to spar, packing audiences with partisans, too many people on stages, and partisan networks sponsoring and hosting debates.Originally posted by falafel View Post

Plus polling shows they don’t move opinions. It’s a spectacle to generate ad revenue and clicks to websites. And ultimately is another symptom of a growing unseriousness in the body politic.
