The GOP is a lost cause as far as presidential candidates go. I'm for any centrist that can hop in the race in any party and win.Originally posted by Maximus View Postdon't know anything about him but dean phillips 2024
This week I reluctantly re-registered as a republican in Utah. I want to vote in the primary to replace Romney especially, but also any other GOP primary.

The GOP is not just a lost cause for presidential candidates. I would feel less shame registering as a sex offender than I would registering as a republicanOriginally posted by USUC View Post

I understand how you'd think this from your standpoint. But the only way to change the GOP is within. Perhaps enough people could start a completely new party, but that doesn't seem realistic. I know you see no good in a conservative party, but for the health of the country we need a functional one.Originally posted by Non Sequitur View Post

The GOP is not a conservative party at the moment. Conservatism literally has no place in the party, and it doesn't seem to even appeal to the vast majority of the people calling themselves Republicans today. There are certainly few principled conservatives on the national stage.Originally posted by USUC View Post

You don't change the KKK from the inside. You accept it is an organization entirely without merit, and acknowledge that those who choose to associate themselves are likely extremists. So it is with the modern day GOP. I recently rejoined my county GOP in order to see if I belonged and possibly to try to push change.
I definitely don't belong. Conspiracy theorists, election deniers, and So. MANY batshit insane people. And I caucused for Ron Paul, so it's not like I was a stranger to batshit insane Republicans before.

I have no problem with a conservative party. I used to be a conservative, granted I was a Bill Buckley, William Safire conservative, but that style of conservatism hasn't existed for a long time. I used to love watching Firing Line. You would have William Buckley and Norman Mailer disagreeing with each other, but having adult conversations. There aren't a lot of adult conversations coming from the right anymore.Originally posted by USUC View Post

So how do you enact change? Join the democratic party which doesn't adhere to fiscal discipline or value freedom of expression? That isn't a satisfactory option either. If creating another party isn't a viable option, what options are there besides trying to take back the GOP?Originally posted by LVAllen View Post

You can't possibly be serious if you think the GOP champions fiscal discipline. There hasn't been fiscal discipline on either side of the aisle since Bill Clinton. It's just a matter of which side's special interests are going to be enriched and which aren't. And when it comes to to freedom of expression, which party is burning books and calling the media the enemy of the people? The slogans about your party that you're holding on to haven't been a reality for a long time.Originally posted by USUC View Post

Comparing the Republican Party to the kkk is ridiculous. Why would people need to change the kkk? It just needs to go away. Whereas it is super important to have a strong 2 party system.
While there are republicans like Governor Cox and Mitt Romney, I will continue to register as a Republican in Utah and support agendas similar to theirs. They are fewer and farther between, but they still exists and I will support them as long as they do.

So if we go back to my original post, I registered as a republican to vote for primary candidates who may be more fiscally responsible and less prone to culture wars. It's like I'm going in circles here.Originally posted by Non Sequitur View Post

I'd love to see that roster of GOP candidates who aren't prone to culture wars. You're looking in the wrong place. You're going to DI to buy a Rolex.Originally posted by USUC View Post

Chris Christie is about it. If anyone pays attention to Vivek, it's clear he is anything but moderate doesn't have a great on foreign policy at all. The more DeSantis tries to be likable, the worse he comes across. Tim Scott is non-entity. Haley has some savviness but she has too much invested in her previous work in the Trump admin to ever call out the MAGA people.Originally posted by Non Sequitur View Post

It's curious Republicans don't give Trump shit for skipping debates.
