I think people want to ban the AR15 because the err when thinking it is disproportionately deadly compared to other guns. Also because it seems to be the gun of choice in mass shootings. But as I've said many times before, you ban those guns, there will be alternative guns to choose from.

This article from the NYT is almost a decade old, but I think it's still relevant to the discussion.

But in the 10 years since the previous ban lapsed, even gun control advocates acknowledge a larger truth: The law that barred the sale of assault weapons from 1994 to 2004 made little difference.

It turns out that big, scary military rifles don’t kill the vast majority of the 11,000 Americans murdered with guns each year. Little handguns do.

it does seem to be the rifle of choice in mass shootings. if there are so many alternatives, what's the problem with banning it other than the fact it would make rednecks sad? seems sorta like the pitbull of rifles. pitbulls disproportionately kill and injure the most people and seem to be the dog of choice for white trash, but there are plenty of alternatives, so i say ban them.

I don't have a problem banning them. But last time, the gun makers simply changed the look of the guns to stay in compliance with the law. No bayonet lug. When's the last time you heard about someone affixing a bayonet and going crazy?

The AR-15 is not the pitbull, it's the shooter that kills people. Take their gun of choice away and they will have a new gun of choice from available options.

Half hearted controls are like spitting in the wind. It won't be until new generations are in charge that anything will change.

The AR-15 is just a type/model of semi automatic rifles. It is the rifle of choice in mass shootings because it is the most popular and most common rifle right now. And again, you may have trouble trying to ban it right now because it is in common use as per the Heller ruling. Maybe magazine size can be? But there are alternatives to the AR-15 like the Mini-14, for example.

I am only semi-serious here. i just find it funny how obsessed gun nuts are over their precious AR-15s and think it would be funny if they were banned (and maybe it would save a few lives in the process). at the same time i understand it's unrealistic and beyond my own selfish desires, not even a worthy cause, as has been pointed out many times in this thread.

I agree. The symbolism that the model has for both sides of the debate is warped.

Washington just passed an assault rifle ban. But the ban is on sales, not possession. i think Oregon passed a magazine size bill as well. These will be working their way through the courts so we'll see where they end up. It is interesting that anti gun violence advocates are spending so much time on the AR-15 instead of handguns.

Yeah, that's the real danger. So easy to conceal and so deadly. You could easily walk around with half a dozen or more, or even just a buttload of extra magazines. Shooters gonna shoot.

Yeah, I use an AR-15 to protect Texas farmers from the wild hogs but handguns for the most part are not that useful for hunting. I do keep a Glock as a back up. The last thing you want is to be treed by some mad mama hog without a backup gun. (This actually happened to a friend.)

No, that’s more of the crazy Hawaiian style of hunting wild hogs.

We are more civilized and use helicopters and automatic weapons.

                            1. Mental health (desire to massacre, possibly aided through lower inhibitions via alcohol)
                            2. Access to weapons (police had been there before regarding him shooting in his yard, so apparently the rifle was legal).
                            3. Access to ammunition
                            4. Access to travel with ammunition and weapons (neighbor).
                            5. Access to exterior of destination
                            6. Access to interior of destination

in a nice north ogden neighborhood last week, a guy went to his brother's house (who had received a larger portion of his deceased parents inheritance), gunned down his brother and the brother's wife and then set the house on fire.

i'm in favor of some additional gun control - if one life is saved it's worth it, but damn - unfortunately there just isn't anything you can do to stop the large majority of these. if a gun owner gets offended by his neighbors or doesn't like the fact his parents left his sibling more money than him, and decides killing them is the route he wants to go, no amount of gun control is going to stop that. effing sucks. you can't legislate irrational/psychopathic thinking away.

                              • true just evidence too many people have guns, maybe some checks are required to make sure someone is mentally there to buy a gun
